Connecting the Dots
Welcome to our February newsletter.

Wisconsin CONNECT is a collaborative. We seek to provide technical assistance and training opportunities for substance use prevention and treatment grantees, providers, clinicians, social workers, and support staff.

We draw on local and national academic and community resources to reduce and prevent substance use and improve overall health and wellness in Wisconsin.

To that end, we want to help you connect the dots with this newsletter. It is a tool to support our efforts to promote new research, share tools and trainings that aim to help you engage in different communities, enhance practice and improve the health of your clients and program participants.
By Robert Vincent, M.S.Ed., Associate Administrator for Alcohol Prevention and Treatment Policy, SAMHSA’s Center for Substance Abuse Prevention

February is Cancer Prevention Month and Heart Health Month. Many people are aware of risks (such as tobacco, unhealthy foods and beverages, and lack of exercise) for cancer and heart disease. Do you also know about the risks posed by alcohol?
Opioid Settlement Funding in Wisconsin

"In January 2022, we listened to Wisconsinites explain the profound impact of the opioid epidemic and potential strategies to save lives. Our goal was to gather big-picture input from a broad group of stakeholders to inform our use of future opioid settlement funds. Here's an overview of who we heard from and the powerful messages they shared."

Resources for Justice-Involved Families
from The University of Wisconsin-Madison

Studies suggest that maintaining family ties and family support can be key factors in successful transition of returning inmates. The resources listed below share information, research and strategies to support individuals, families and children of incarcerated parents. Resources specific to jail populations and partners have been included.

The grant programs are:
  • Services Grant Program for Residential Treatment for Pregnant and Postpartum Women – $11.6 million – This program provides comprehensive SUD treatment services, recovery support services, and harm reduction interventions to pregnant and postpartum women across a continuum of specialty residential and outpatient levels of care. Using a holistic approach, grant funds also support required activities for minor children, partners of the women and other extended family members of the women and children, as requested by the women. Central to this is ensuring access to services for low-income women, including providing these services in locations they can access.
  • State Pilot Grant Program for Treatment for Pregnant and Postpartum Women – $5.4 million – The program enhances flexibility in the use of funds designed to support family-based services for pregnant and postpartum women who have a primary diagnosis of a SUD, emphasizing the treatment of opioid use disorders; help state agencies address the continuum of SUD care, including services provided to pregnant and postpartum women in nonresidential settings; and promote a coordinated state system managed by state substance agencies by encouraging new approaches and models of service delivery.

FASD Self-Paced Training Series

Many medical, allied health care providers, educators, and others work with individuals affected by prenatal alcohol exposure—diagnosed or undiagnosed—but may lack training to identify, refer, and/or provide effective services. Few agencies offer FASD training to address these important issues.

This FASD self-paced learning series helps decrease the knowledge gap by providing on-demand educational opportunities to learn more about the prevention, identification, and treatment of FASD.
2023 HOPE Consortium Webinar Series

This series will consist of free, 1-hour webinars occurring the fourth Friday of each month from February through June beginning at 10:00 am.

Director of Substance Abuse Services, Family Health Center of Marshfield, Inc. (FHC) Alcohol & Drug Recovery Services
In this session, participants will gain a foundational understanding of substances, impacts on individuals, treatment and the multiple pathways for recovery. These free, interactive webinars will serve as an excellent onboarding tool for both new and returning professionals and intend to provide a foundations focus.
