Connecting the Dots

Welcome to our May newsletter!

Wisconsin CONNECT is a collaborative. We seek to provide technical assistance and training opportunities for substance use prevention and treatment grantees, providers, clinicians, social workers, and support staff.

We draw on local and national academic and community resources to reduce and prevent substance use and improve overall health and wellness in Wisconsin.

To that end, we want to help you connect the dots with this newsletter. It is a tool to support our efforts to promote new research, share tools and trainings that aim to help you engage in different communities, enhance practice and improve the health of your clients and program participants.

Attachment Based Family Therapy (ABFT) Introductory Workshop: Part One

from UW-Green Bay

May 22, 2024

8:30am - 4:15pm CST

Attachment Based Family Therapy is a manualized, empirically informed family therapy model specifically designed to target family and individual processes associated with adolescent suicide and depression. ABFT emerges from interpersonal theories that suggest adolescent depression and suicide can be precipitated, exacerbated or buffered against by the quality of interpersonal relationships in families. Tested with diverse families, including low- income and minority families, ABFT is a trust-based, emotion-focused psychotherapy model that aims to repair interpersonal ruptures and rebuild an emotionally protective, secure-based parent–child relationship.

FASD Self-Paced Training Series

from Wisconsin Connect

On Demand Training

Many medical, allied health care providers, educators, and others work with individuals affected by prenatal alcohol exposure—diagnosed or undiagnosed—but may lack training to identify, refer, and/or provide effective services. Few agencies offer FASD training to address these important issues.

This FASD self-paced learning series helps decrease the knowledge gap by providing on-demand educational opportunities to learn more about the prevention, identification, and treatment of FASD.

OCMH Provides Toolkit for Children's Mental Health Week

Listen & Connect with Youth to Recognize Children's Mental Health Week

from Wisconsin DHS

The Wisconsin State Office of Children’s Mental Health (OCMH) invites families, schools, and organizations across the state to join them in recognizing Children’s Mental Health Week, May 5-11, 2024. This year, OCMH has released new resources inspired by Wisconsin’s high school students.

OCMH provides a Children's Mental Health Toolkit to help individuals and organizations celebrate Children's Mental Health Week. OCMH Director Linda Hall introduces Children's Mental Health Week and shares information on the OCMH toolkit in this video

The toolkit includes youth mental wellness coping strategies, social media posts, and advocacy tools including Gov. Evers' Children's Mental Health Week proclamation, a press release/letter to the editor all ready for organizations to personalize and use, and a children's mental wellness data presentation. Access the toolkit here

Youth share their mental health and wellness coping strategies

Youth candidly share their strategies for mental wellness. Tips include: breathe, play a relaxing game, listen to music, watch movies, talk to a friend, go outside, and journal. See what is working for some of Wisconsin’s youth.

See a compilation of seven strategies. See each coping strategy individually in the toolkit.

Youth also share mental wellness advice with other youth.

And, youth share what they want adults to know  about youth mental health.

Youth shared these thoughts at the Mental Wellness Student Leadership Summit hosted by OCMH in April 2024. More information on school-based peer-led wellness programs in Wisconsin can be found on the OCMH website.

Linda Hall, OCMH Director, reminds all individuals in Wisconsin that they can have an impact on youth. She said, “Talk to the kids you see in daily life. Reach out and ask how they are doing. Listen to their answers.” Though a simple act, Hall underscores that inviting youth to talk about their lives and how they’re feeling is one of the best ways of connecting with kids. “When youth feel heard, they feel better.”

Key facts on the status of youth mental health in Wisconsin show that many of our kids are struggling.

  • More than half (52%) report anxiety
  • Nearly half (48%) of LGBTQ kids say they seriously considered suicide; and one in four (25%) of girls seriously considered suicide
  • More than a third (34%) report feeling sad and hopeless nearly every day

To learn more about these and other children's mental health data, see the Office of Children’s Mental Health 2023 Annual Report.
