Welcome to our August newsletter!
Wisconsin CONNECT is a collaborative. We seek to provide technical assistance and training opportunities for substance use prevention and treatment grantees, providers, clinicians, social workers, and support staff.
We draw on local and national academic and community resources to reduce and prevent substance use and improve overall health and wellness in Wisconsin.
To that end, we want to help you connect the dots with this newsletter. It is a tool to support our efforts to promote new research, share tools and trainings that aim to help you engage in different communities, enhance practice and improve the health of your clients and program participants.

Registration open for the Wisconsin Substance Use Prevention Conference |

We’ve partnered with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services to present the Wisconsin Substance Use Prevention Conference September 13-14, 2023. Join this event in person at the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells or virtually. All participants have access to presentations and workshops focused on the root causes of substance use and strategies to protect and promote the health and safety of all Wisconsinites. CEUs are available. Save $50 on your registration fee if you register by September 4, 2023. The final registration deadline is 1 p.m. September 13, 2023. A limited number of rooms are available at the Kalahari Resort at $90 per night for single occupancy. This special rate is available through August 13, 2023.

Trauma and the Brain: An Introduction
from Community Advocates Public Policy Institute
Tuesday, August 15
As a result of this workshop, participants will gain a better understanding as to how trauma affects the brain, discuss risk factors for substance use disorders, and develop their strategy for intervention methods for a particular population. Topics to be covered are substance use and ACEs, risk factors, strategies for care, and more. This session from Community Advocates Public Policy Institute will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on August 15. It’s free and open to everyone.

Prospective Prediction of Lapses in Opioid Use Disorder: Protocol for a Personal Sensing Study
from University of Wisconsin Addiction Research Center
John Curtin’s laboratory focuses on the development and implementation of digital therapeutics, which are software programs or “apps” that prevent, manage, or treat disease including substance use disorders and other mental illness. Digital therapeutics can provide empirically-supported interventions, illness and treatment management tools, and services to enhance peer support and communications with care providers.
They primarily focus on algorithm development for temporally precise psychiatric risk prediction (e.g., moment by moment relapse risk prediction; efficient and early psychiatric screening) and “just-in-time” personalized interventions that adapt to both characteristics of the patient and their moment in time. To this end, they combine analytic approaches from machine learning with novel, highly informative signals (e.g., geolocation; cellular communications; social media activity; physiology via wearable biosensors) derived by passive personal sensing.

Nominations are now open for awards that will be given at the conference to recognize the outstanding work of individuals and organizations building healthy communities through substance use prevention. Award categories include:

FASD Self-Paced Training Series
Many medical, allied health care providers, educators, and others work with individuals affected by prenatal alcohol exposure—diagnosed or undiagnosed—but may lack training to identify, refer, and/or provide effective services. Few agencies offer FASD training to address these important issues.
This FASD self-paced learning series helps decrease the knowledge gap by providing on-demand educational opportunities to learn more about the prevention, identification, and treatment of FASD.

Social Connection Statewide Support Provider Funding Opportunity

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) is excited to announce a funding opportunity for an agency to provide support for social connections work being implemented statewide. The agency selected will be responsible for providing consultation to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) and other partners on how to foster positive social connections for maternal and child health (MCH) populations within our existing public health infrastructure and programs. This opportunity is funded by the Wisconsin Title V program.
Applicants will be awarded based on available funding, capacity, and ability to meet application criteria. An application for this funding opportunity is available at this link.
The application will be open for one month, July 24, 2023–August 21, 2023.
