Connecting the Dots
Welcome to our May newsletter!

Wisconsin CONNECT is a collaborative. We seek to provide technical assistance and training opportunities for substance use prevention and treatment grantees, providers, clinicians, social workers, and support staff.

We draw on local and national academic and community resources to reduce and prevent substance use and improve overall health and wellness in Wisconsin.

To that end, we want to help you connect the dots with this newsletter. It is a tool to support our efforts to promote new research, share tools and trainings that aim to help you engage in different communities, enhance practice and improve the health of your clients and program participants.

WAPC Fetal Monitoring Case Review Series
from Wisconsin Association for Perinatal Care
Monitoring a pregnant person and their fetus during the antepartum and intrapartum periods is an essential component of perinatal care. The purpose of this course is to use case studies to build on knowledge of and skills about interpreting electronic fetal heart rate strips.
This course offers:
  • Continuing skill-building through an interactive approach that goes beyond the basics of who, how, and when to monitor
  • Content for those who have demonstrated competency in basic fetal monitoring skills
  • Unique curriculum at EVERY session, using NEW case studies and strip reviews from actual de-identified cases from across Wisconsin
  • Discussion using current ACOG/NICHD recommendations
  • Interaction with colleagues around the state with the convenience of learning from work or home
The interactive live sessions will be held via Zoom; recordings will be available. Continuing education for attending both live or recorded sessions will be available for both CNE and CME. These case studies are intended for physicians, nurses, certified nurse midwives, and other perinatal providers who routinely do electronic fetal monitoring.

FASD Self-Paced Training Series

Many medical, allied health care providers, educators, and others work with individuals affected by prenatal alcohol exposure—diagnosed or undiagnosed—but may lack training to identify, refer, and/or provide effective services. Few agencies offer FASD training to address these important issues.

This FASD self-paced learning series helps decrease the knowledge gap by providing on-demand educational opportunities to learn more about the prevention, identification, and treatment of FASD.

DHS Awards $8 million for Opioid and Stimulant Treatment Services
News Release from Wisconsin DHS

Tribal nation and county agencies to use funding from the State Opioid Response Grant Program to support local needs
Over 4,000 people throughout Wisconsin will have access to treatment for the problem use of opioids or stimulants now through September because of $8 million in grants awarded today by the Department of Health Services (DHS) to three tribal nations and 22 county agencies. Opioids include prescription pain relievers, heroin, and fentanyl. Stimulants include cocaine and methamphetamine.

“Improving access to treatment is a critical part of our plan to reduce the hurt and heartbreak caused by the epidemic of problem drug use we’re living with statewide,” DHS Secretary-designee Kirsten Johnson. “These grants will enable our local partners to remove the financial barriers to effective treatment, allowing more people to experience the promise of recovery. Recovery is possible for everyone.”

Emergent, the maker of the opioid overdose antidote Narcan, said in a statement Thursday that it is aiming for an out-of-pocket price of less than $50 for its nasal spray product.

Public interest groups such as government agencies, nonprofits, and first responders pay less than $50, on average, for a kit of two 4-milligram doses, the company says. The wholesale price is $125 per kit.
