CONTINUE LEARNING ONLINE WITH THESE FOUR NEW PROGRAMS
With tech help on standby, students survived a pandemic chapter of learning online. As more classes return to in-person learning this fall, there are still many busy students who prefer more flexible classes where they don’t have to travel to campus or sit at their computers at a certain time. This fall, CLC will offer four new programs entirely online in accounting, human services, supply chain management and a general associate in arts degree.

Additionally, CLC listened to the recent employer needs in the pharmaceutical industry and created a new pharmacy technician certificate program.
GRANT PROVIDES PAID SUMMER INTERNSHIPS TO LAKE COUNTY STUDENTS
A generous grant from Employee Connections provides CLC students with paid internship opportunities this summer. The Signature Summer Internship Program, through the Career and Job Placement Center at CLC, helps place students in internships and pays them $15 per hour while providing a work experience opportunity to help with career exploration.

Students can also enroll in and earn up to three free credit hours in Educational Work Experience courses. Employee Connections also offers support services including transportation, clothing and supplies to those in need.
SCHOLARSHIPS PROVIDE TUITION-FREE TICKET TO LAW SCHOOL FOR ALUM
“Every school I’ve attended has been tuition free.”

That’s not something every student can say, but Ryan Haass touts the achievement proudly. The CLC graduate from Vernon Hills remembers spending hours and hours researching colleges and scholarships. The digging really paid off in the end because he will have received more than $200,000 in scholarships once he completes his law degree from the University of Illinois.
DEAN OF STUDENT LIFE NAMED NATIONAL HISPANIC LEADERSHIP FELLOW
Dean of Student Life Dr. Gabe Lara was chosen to participate in the National Community College Hispanic Council Leadership Development Program as a 2021 Fellow. Grateful for the opportunity to grow professionally, he said, “It is my responsibility to create spaces for students charged with enhancing their educational experience to empower them inside and outside of the classroom.”

As a Latino first-generation college student, Lara never saw anyone who looked like him in an administrator role while he was a student on campus. For this reason, he hopes to normalize that someone who looks like him can be dean, vice president or president of an institution of higher education.
$80K GRANT HELPS HEALTHCARE AND SOCIAL SERVICES STUDENTS
The Healthcare Foundation of Northern Lake County (HFNLC) recently awarded College of Lake County (CLC) another $80,000 in scholarships for students studying healthcare and, for the first time, alcohol and drug counseling.

The funds show a recommitment to Scholarships Promoting Lake County Affordable and Sustainable Healthcare (SPLASH) for students in the Biological and Health Sciences Division, making it possible for scholarship recipients to work less and study more while in school. An additional $15,000 was granted to the human services program to increase educational opportunities for alcohol and drug counselors, especially those who are bilingual and in high demand.
CLC TRUSTEES AND FACULTY MEMBER RECEIVE ICCTA AWARDS
The Illinois Community College Trustees Association recently honored trustees emeriti Dr. William M. Griffin, Richard A. Anderson and instructor Mandi Urban with three prestigious state-wide awards. They were recognized at a banquet in Springfield, Il. June 4.

For three consecutive years, a faculty member from CLC received this state-wide award recognizing outstanding faculty. During the June board meeting, CLC Board Vice Chair Julie Shroka remarked how this trend reflects how great our faculty are. Her comments were met with applause.
SUMMER OF STEEL AT LAKESHORE CAMPUS
Witness the “summer of steel” as steel beams are installed in the new Student Services Building. This will solidify CLC’s commitment to our students and the Lakeshore community. Additionally, the Waukegan campus will complete the new facade of the building at 31 N. Genesee, an exciting finishing touch to the new bookstore and student space. Students can work, study and relax in the new bright and welcoming space as they go through their day at Lakeshore.
CLC EXPLORING INTEGRATION WITH UNIVERSITY CENTER OF LAKE COUNTY
College of Lake County (CLC) Board of Trustees plans to embark on a year-long process to research and plan an integration strategy with the University Center of Lake County (UCLC), then develop a proposal for the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE). This proposed integration supports IBHE’s new Strategic Equity Plan and its shared goals with the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) to align higher education strategies with economic development to build a more robust, diverse talent pipeline by retaining local access to high quality, low cost bachelor degree completion.

CLC Board of Trustees Chair Amanda Howland said the two organizations are motivated by a common mission to increase the access to, and gain successful completion of, college degrees for all students.
