Connection, Wellness, and Homesickness
"If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way"
- Martin Luther King Jr.

I feel like this quote is relatable to parenting. It's not a glamorous job and it often goes unnoticed but we still put forth great effort in all of the small things we do. In turn, all of our actions make a great difference in someone's life. Thank you for all that you do.

It has been an exciting week having your students back at SUU, their presence is what gives campus the great life that we all look forward to. We hope that your students are adapting to the rigors of starting a new semester. In the next few weeks you're student may start struggling with homesickness, adjusting to roommates, and learning to manage their social life with their school work. While this is very normal for students, it can be hard as parents to watch them go through these struggles. Here's a few tips from College Parent Central that will help you support your student.

  • Be willing to listen to your student’s feelings and validate that they are real
  • Remind yourself that increased independence is one of the goals for your college student
  • Suggest that your student get involved on campus
  • Continue to make positive comments about the college and the college experience

You may be searching for ways to show them extra support knowing that, in order to reduce the spread of COVID-19, they may not be able to make the occasional visit home. This article gives several ideas of how to support and encourage your student during a pandemic.

Health & Wellness
The SUU Health & Wellness Center strives to promote the holistic health and well-being of students through comprehensive programming, peer-to-peer support, and preventative education. The Health and Wellness Center has a variety of resources to help students learn how to live healthy and sustainable lives by connecting them to those who might best help with their specific needs. Our center offers distress activities (coloring, stress balls, Zen gardens, etc.), individual one-on-one meetups with a Mental Health Support Peer, Let's Talk (drop-in counseling consultations), biofeedback, and a fully supplied self-care station (feminine hygiene products, select medicines, pregnancy tests, condoms, cough drops, tissues, first aid, etc.). The center is a place for students who may be experiencing mental health challenges, and our center works closely with CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services) to connect individuals to appropriate professional resources. We strive to be a friendly, encouraging, and comfortable place on campus for students.

Come visit with us in ST 175 and join us for our weekly Wellness Walk Wednesdays at 1 PM. Walking is a great way to improve mental health, release stress, and be active while meeting new people! We will have various activities throughout the year. Follow us on instagram and check out our website to keep updated!
The Health and Wellness Center would like to thank Riley Reynolds for all of her work as the Health and Wellness Coordinator and wish her the best of luck on her new journey! The H&W Center has a new coordinator, Jessie Mineer. Jessie graduated with a B.S., Family Life and Human Development from SUU last semester. She is eager to get to know and help our campus.

Mindful Self-Compassion with CAPS

Being a human is hard. We all suffer, fall short, and have moments of deep pain. Self-compassion provides a way to approach yourself with more openness and care during these difficult times. It's like being your own best friend!
This workshop is formatted much like a class. Through lessons, written exercises, and meditations, SUU students learn practical ways to apply the 3 steps of self-compassion. It is a great place to learn skills with no pressure to self-disclose. Many students keep their cameras off and interact via chat if they have questions for the workshop leaders. We recommend that you attend a minimum of 3 consecutive weeks, and welcome you to attend as many as you want.

Workshop space is reserved for your SUU students. Others interested in self-compassion can explore the resources on self-compassion.org. Your student can join the Mindful Self-Compassion workshop via Zoom at https://zoom.us/j/94482697700.
CAPS offers a variety of workshops and open enrollment groups to meet the mental health needs of students. Learn more here: www.suu.edu/caps/groups.html
