Connections
February 5, 2020
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, or anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39

My Mother-in-law was called to her heavenly home last week. It was peaceful, yet it was sudden. It hurts and we grieve! Death is a “forever” loss.

Have you ever shaken your fist at God in frustration or anger? Perhaps your father was diagnosed with cancer or your mom died of a sudden heart attack. Perhaps your spouse walked out on you or your son became addicted to drugs. In pain, we lash out at God and ask, “Why? Why is this happening to me? Why now?”

The truth is nothing can separate us from God’s love. Even if we express anger toward God, His love for us never wavers. He doesn’t turn His back when we raise our fists. He doesn’t reject us when we don’t understand His ways. He stands by us in our time of anguish and suffering. He allows us to cry, question, and express our anger or grief. He continues to love us as He always has and always will. God meets us in the depths of our despair. He holds us. He understands our pain. He desires that we continue to trust Him even as we walk through our deepest valleys. His love is unconditional.

Revised Salary and Ministry Guidelines
The Pacific Southwest District has adopted Concordia Plan Services' Compensation Decision Support Tools for churches and schools to provide suggested salary guidelines. Information and links to the tools are now available on the PSD website under  Resources > Salary Guidelines . In addition, revised  Ministry Guidelines  are available from this page. The Ministry Guidelines provide a comprehensive ministry and worker care resource for your congregation/school to help you care, support and encourage church and school workers as we partner in ministry.
PSD Special Programs
Below, we are highlighting one of our PSD schools that has a dedicated programs for special learners. We will continue to share more as the year goes on!

The Resource Program at Christ Lutheran School – La Mesa is available to all grade levels (Kindergarten – 8 th  grade). The program was designed to primarily provide support for students who struggle in Math and/or Language Arts. By working to identify learning needs and provide intervention strategies as early as possible, Christ Lutheran School seeks to meet the needs of learners who are below average and/or behind their peers in core academic content. By providing one-on-one and small group instruction, many of the students receiving Resource Program assistance are able to “catch up” as they are equipped with a variety of learning strategies.

In addition to providing short-term student support, the Resource Program also provides long-term student support for enrolled students with more significant learning challenges. The Resource Teacher works with classroom teachers and parents to strategize accommodations and methods to meet student needs. The program also includes alternative Math classes for students who need additional assistance and a slower academic pace in middle school.

Mrs. Holden, Christ Lutheran School’s Resource Teacher, has a Master’s degree in Special Education, has completed her LCMS colloquy, and serves an 80% schedule. In addition to providing student and teacher support, she works closely with parents as they navigate testing through the public school sector, attend IEP meetings, and transition students into appropriate high school placement. She also partners with educators from the local public Special Education departments and with private specialists (for example, speech therapists and educational consultants) as she helps weave together necessary services for CLS students.

Christ Lutheran School has been committed to the Resource Program for more than forty years. Strategies, location, funding, and leadership of the program have changed over the years, but their commitment to providing support and meeting the various needs of the student entrusted to their care remains the program’s goal and purpose.

TEC21 - Register Today!
We have a great partnership with TEC21 here in the PSD!  TEC21 provides a year long, workshop style professional development for technology integration for classroom teachers in Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle School, and High School. TEC21’s vision is connecting and equipping Lutheran school teachers to inspire students in Technology Enriched Classrooms.

TEC21 is passionate about this because they recognize, as you do too, that technology in the classroom is non-negotiable. Research and exploration points to the need for both a strong digital platform in every classroom and tech-savvy teachers. They know, as do you, that kids are early adapters and as such the concern becomes that kids will leave behind the educator who lags in interest or aptitude for digital innovations. Parents are making school choices for their children understanding this as well. You can read more about TEC21 on their website at https://tec21connect.com/

In the nine years the PSD has been involved with TEC21, 138 teachers have gone through the program! Here is what a few of our PSD participants have said about their experience:

I had the wonderful opportunity to attend TEC21 last year. The forum allowed each of us the opportunity to try new technology that we could integrate into our classroom curriculum. It was great to share ideas that each of us already were using, as well as add new tools to our teaching tool box. The variety of topics and “hands-on” activities kept the classes engaging and fun. It was interesting to see how everyone used what was introduced within their own classroom. Another great benefit of TEC21 was becoming better acquainted with fellow Lutheran school teachers here in the Valley. -Jennifer E., AZ Teacher

TEC21 has challenged me to do more in my classroom. I’m not satisfied with just following the book -- every lesson or activity can be enhanced and I’m so excited to try new things. I am teaching a new-to-me grade this year and I am so excited to incorporate new-to-me tech! I think it has made me more open to learning from my kids, too! They are born with technology in their hands and have so much to share with me -- I’m ready to listen! -Tara K., AZ Teacher

TEC21 has energized my teachers in a way that regular PD hasn’t. The on-going, month-to-month support from the instructor and group has been wonderful. The teachers immediately implement their learning with their students and assess their own learning, as well. Each year the teachers scramble to be a part of TEC21! -Jake H., CA Administrator

TEC21 has expanded my horizons when it comes to technology in the classroom. With my cohorts, I have learned new strategies, apps, games, and lessons. I highly recommend it to any teacher, tech savvy or not. -Brandon B., NV Teacher

"Enriched" is the word that comes to mind when I think of my TEC21 experience. This program has given me the opportunity to explore possibilities for my classroom, learn from others' successes and failures, as well as actual time to create and implement these great ideas! My students and colleagues have benefited as well from my constant learning during my TEC21 days that are so fun to be a part of! -Brianna D., NV Teacher

TEC21 has given me the opportunity to have fun exploring tech tools that are new to me. But I especially value the opportunity to collaborate with other educators to explore the limitless possibilities of using tech in a meaningful way to enhance my students’ learning. – Cathy M., CA Teacher

The opportunity to attend TEC21 has been a gift. The wealth of information on technology, implementation, and collaboration with other Lutheran teachers both in my class and across the country, has been extremely valuable. -Kelly H., CA Teacher

We STRONGLY encourage you to attend TEC21 if you haven’t already! We have four Innovations Centers in the Pacific Southwest District – Christ, Phoenix; Christ, La Mesa; Faith Middle School & High School, Las Vegas; and St. John’s, Orange. Each of these centers can host 10 teachers for this training – 40 total PSD educators each year! Yes! There is room for you to attend! And to make it affordable, LCEF has a generous scholarship opportunity that you can apply for by using this link.

TEC21 is now accepting applications for the 2020-21 school year. You can apply to attend here. The deadline to register for next year’s workshops is March 31 and the deadline to apply for the LCEF Scholarship (see link above) is March 1. If you have questions, please reach out to us in School Ministries. Better yet, contact the schools that host the Innovation Centers and ask to speak to the TEC21 Facilitator! Don’t wait! Apply today!
