Connections
January 27, 2021
Lutheran churches and schools speak of “team ministry.” While it’s often part of the conversation and always a goal, effective team ministry is sometimes elusive. As team members, we often don’t play well together because we’d rather meet our own personal goals than the team’s goals. Rather than enjoying team ministry victories, we dwell on personal and ministry defeats.

Paul describes the church as a “body” in 1 Corinthians 12. Paul advises the church in Corinth, “You are the body of Christ and individually members of it” (v. 27). The passage might be paraphrased, “You are members of Christ’s
team.” Modern-day professional team ownership is a complicated business. Team members must be highly skilled and deeply committed. Team members can be quickly released or traded.

Praise God we are not chosen to be on His team based on our skills. We have nothing to bring to our Owner. However, He purchased us for His team, paying with His own blood. He brings us to His team in our Baptism and promises that He will never release us from His commitment. Our response to our Owner is that of the First Article of the Apostles’ Creed, “For all this it is my duty to thank and praise, serve and obey Him.”

Our faithful service is our response. God calls us not only to the team of the church, but He calls us into specific ministry roles in the local church and school. God has chosen each of us to be part of His team in this time and
place. Effective teams are joyful teams. May we have great joy as we live in His victory and share that victory with one another and the world.

LCMS Esther 4:14 and Soldiers of the Cross Respite Grants
The LCMS Office of National Mission has launched a new national grant program to encourage congregations to purchase equipment to meet the challenges of “Proclaiming God’s Word” in an environment challenged by COVID-19. Details about the “Esther 4:14 – For Such a Time as This” grant can be accessed through the following link:

Funding is still available for Soldiers of the Cross Respite Grants. Interested districts, congregations and schools can submit an application for a grant (up to $2,000) to their district office for processing. Currently, about 50% of LCMS districts have taken advantage of this opportunity. All church workers (part and full time, rostered and non-rostered, preschool, elementary, and high school) are eligible to apply if they have a need during this pandemic. You can apply through the PSD President's office – barbara.farley@psd-lcms.org.

Concordia University Serves Day
On Tuesday, February 9, Concordia University Irvine will be celebrating their second annual Concordia Serves day. One of the planned activities is to have CUI students and faculty make phone calls to shut-ins and write notes of encouragement. CUI would like to serve those who have been cut off from the outside world for the past 10 months. They are asking churches to share with them names, phone numbers, and addresses of those in your community who are unable to leave their homes. CUI will call the individuals and then send them an encouraging note and a care package. If your church or school would like to participate, please send your shut-in contact information to Bil.Hood@cui.edu.
Prayer Requests
  • For the family of Kathy Ermeling. Kathy, the wife of Rev. Vernon Ermeling, transitioned to her heavenly home on Saturday, January 23. After a two week battle with her auto-immune system in ICU she was put on hospice and she passed peacefully. Kathy taught at Hephatha Lutheran Preschool, Anaheim, CA, and helped start the Preschool at Christ Lutheran, Phoenix, AZ. Pastor Ermeling and Kathy faithfully served at several churches in the PSD. Daughter-in-law Lyndsay Ermeling teaches at Faith Lutheran Middle School & High School, Las Vegas, NV. A memorial service will be held this summer, at a date to be determined. Please keep the Ermeling family in your prayers.
  • A prayer of thanksgiving for eight baptisms yesterday at Circle of Love Preschool in Manhattan Beach, CA! God is so good!
