"Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your Word with great boldness." Acts 4:29
Several years ago, after hearing Weston Kieschnick speak on his then-new book, “Bold School”, I posed the question to a group of administrators, "Are you an old school or a bold school?"
Your school can be a bold school for a variety of reasons, including being on the forefront of technology integration, having the latest STEM lab and STEAM curricula, having a gifted staff and sound educational practice. But while all of these would certainly qualify as “bold school” practices, the critical and most important reason that should be considered is your missional DNA - that you boldly proclaim Jesus as Lord and Savior to a community in desperate need of the HOPE that only Jesus Christ can give!
Acts relates the spreading of the Gospel of God's grace both: 1) geographically (from Jerusalem through the eastern Mediterranean lands to the capital of the Roman Empire) and 2) theologically (from a small Jewish-Christian community to an extended church in which Gentile Christians equaled, if not surpassed, in number the believers among the Jews). Acts also includes various problems and their solutions – all under the guidance of God's grace through His Holy Spirit! In Acts, we also read about the boldness and courage with which the apostles and early Christians proclaimed the Gospel message, and we know how God multiplied their ministry, despite threats, problems and adversity, and grew HIS church! What a great testimony to us as Lutheran educators as we read Acts and consider our classrooms, our schools, our congregations and our witness to our communities, especially in this (hopefully) post-pandemic time! This summer, I encourage you to read the book of Acts by the pool, at the beach, in the shade of a tree in the desert, or while on vacation! Let the words and witness of some of these heroes of the faith like Peter, John, Paul and Barnabas motivate you to reflect upon this past school year and look forward to the upcoming school year with great boldness and courage! God bless you! ~Rachel Klitzing
Lutheran Elementary School Tournament OC - L.E.S.T. OC, February 18-20, 2022
Greetings from Concordia University Irvine!
For nearly 60 years, Concordia University Portland hosted the original LEST. What started out as a local basketball tournament grew into three days of competitions in athletics, the arts, and academic disciplines - drawing participants from seven states and Canada. Concordia Portland hosted their last LEST in 2019, just prior to its closing.
We at Concordia Irvine, along with our partners, Crean Lutheran High School and Orange Lutheran High School, as well as the leaders of the Pacific Southwest District, the California/Nevada/Hawaii District, and the Northwest District of the LCMS, are pleased to announce the continuation of this great tradition at the inaugural LEST OC on February 18-20, 2022. Our intention is to host events all day Friday the 18th, with an opening ceremony that evening, continuing all day Saturday the 19th, take a break until noon on Sunday the 20th (encouraging participants to worship at a local church) and end on Championship Sunday, with games and events from noon to 5pm, and a closing awards ceremony where we will give the LEST OC Spirit Award to one deserving school.
In recent years the Portland LEST events included:
Dance/Drill Team
Knowledge Bowl
Music (choir, band, bell choir, piano, solo instrumental, solo vocal)
It is our hope to continue hosting these events, along with some new ones.
Concordia, Crean Lutheran, and Orange Lutheran will be working through the summer to staff and plan for these events. Watch for details to be released in the coming months.
This fall, we will be releasing a registration website to all Lutheran schools in the western US, inviting participants in 5th-8th grades to join us on our campuses. To ensure the best possible experience, LEST OC will have registration limits on all events and spots will be secured on a first come, first served basis.
Additionally, the website (currently showing results of the 2021 virtual LEST) will include links to hotels with special pricing, dining options, and area attractions.
If you have any questions, or would like to be placed on a priority communication list, please contact Bil Hood at
We look forward to a great event - one that will not only glorify God, but will help to encourage and grow middle school students through academics, the arts, and athletics.

Lutheran Hour Float 2022
The theme of the 2022 Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade is Dream, Believe, Achieve and the theme Lutheran Hour Ministries
Float is Jesus Teaches.
Throughout the four gospels of the Bible, we learn of Jesus teaching people everywhere he goes. He teaches on a number of topics: prayer, forgiveness, the nature of God’s kingdom, generosity, stewardship, the Old Testament, and so on.
The teachings of Jesus open our imaginations to a world of possibility where the broken are made whole, where the unlovable are deeply loved, where death is not an end but a new beginning.
Most importantly, Jesus teaches us about who he is and his work on the cross through which God declares peace between heaven and earth.
