“Oh Lord, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning, I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.” Psalm 5:3
Sacrifice. An offering to God on our behalf. An offering from God on our behalf.
Tomorrow is Maundy Thursday. It’s the day of the Lord’s Supper, the last meal of Jesus with those closest to him. First, Jesus washes the feet of his disciples, something only a selfless servant would do. Then he foreshadows his own selfless sacrifice by offering up the bread and the wine as his own body and blood, shed for us for the forgiveness of our sins.
This is significant because the sacrifice of Jesus as the Lamb of God is the ultimate fulfillment in the New Testament of the sacrifices God ordained in the Old Testament as atonement for sin. The sacrifice referenced in Psalm 5 was David’s offering to God because he knew he sinned daily; Jesus would become the ultimate sacrifice when God offered up his own Son for the forgiveness of sins and for life everlasting. A selfless act on our behalf.
Lamb of God, thank you that forgiveness is mine through your sacrifice. Your grace is all-sufficient, and I cannot thank you enough! As I receive the Lord’s Supper, remind me of the immense sacrifice you made for me…for me! Help me, Lord, to reflect your grace and sacrificial love to those around me; especially to my students and co-workers. Amen.

Ensure Compliance and Caution During Reopening
Arizona and the regions of Nevada and California within the Pacific Southwest District have seen movement towards wider reopening from COVID-19 restrictions. As our churches and schools are able to increase capacities and in-person activities on their campuses, the PSD staff rejoices with you and also reminds you to conduct your reopening with care and caution.
Ensure that, as employers, you are in compliance with relevant state and local requirements, and with your insurance company requirements. This is especially important where written COVID-19 preparedness plans are required (including Arizona and California) – ensure plans are in place, being followed and communicated with employees trained in risk factors and prevention. OSHA has made clear that employers nationwide should provide “workers with up-to-date education and training on COVID-19 risk factors and protective behaviors.” In the growing number of states where specific training is required (including California), make sure training is conducted periodically and that successful training completion is documented for each employee. Beyond the primary goals of health and safety for those on your church or school campus, regulatory agencies like Cal/OSHA are actively engaged in enforcement in these areas. Be cautious, and take the necessary steps towards compliance.

Form EEO-1 Filing Required for Employers with 100+ Employees - Including Churches and Schools
Recently PSD staff have received questions regarding filing requirements for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s (EEOC) form EEO-1. The EEO-1 filing requires most employers with 100 or more employees to provide data on the racial/ethnic and gender composition of their workforce by specific job categories, referred to as component 1 data. In 2019, certain employers were also required to report hours worked and wage data to the EEOC, referred to as component 2 data. Note that there is no religious exemption - churches or schools with 100 or more employees will most likely need to file. Consult with your professional or legal resources or insurance provider for your organization.
The EEOC originally extended the deadline to March 31, 2021, for filing 2019 and 2020 data due to the pandemic. The EEOC postponed the data collection date again, but without setting a definite deadline for filing. At this point, it is anticipated the EEOC will open the portal for submission of 2019 and 2020 EEO-1 reports in April. A deadline for filing has not been published as of this time.
It is recommended that churches and schools eligible to file prepare their data submissions in advance so they are ready for submission when the portal opens. As in previous years, the EEOC stated that a notification letter will be sent to eligible filers.

Commissioned Minister Information Form - It's Time to Update
Commissioned Ministers, now is a great time to remind you to update your Commissioned Minister Information Form (CMIF). We encourage you to treat your CMIF as an accurate professional resume and strongly recommend that you take the time necessary to access your form and make sure it is fully updated. Yes, the CMIF form is shared with Calling congregations if you indicate you would consider or are seeking a job change, but the primary reason for your CMIF is to create an accurate record of your professional service to Lutheran churches and schools. If you are not interested in a new position, you are able to indicate that on the form. You can update your CMIF on the Church Worker Update website – Once you access the site you will see a log-in box. If you have your log-in information that was sent to you from Rosters and Statistics, you can log-in there. If you don’t have that information, there are quick links available to request the information again or you can click the HELP tab and that will give you phone numbers to Rosters and Statistics in St. Louis. Please take some time over your Easter break to log-in and check it out!

Honoring Jubilarians in 2021
We are very excited for our Lutheran Educators Conference (LEC) in November 2021. The planning and hard work has already begun. We will be honoring two years of Jubilarians at LEC 2021. Jubilarians are those educators on your staff who have completed 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 or 50 years of service at the end of the 2019-2020 & 2020-2021 school years. If you filled out a form last year, please fill out a new form to assure that we have the correct information.
If you are an administrator, please identify those on your staff that will be Jubilarians, so that when the forms are sent out, they are able to be completed and sent in by the June 15 deadline. Click on the link to fill out the form: Jubilarian Form
God’s continued blessings on your ministry!
