National ADHD Awareness Month - October 2019

Aggression. Forgetfulness. Boredom. These are among the signs of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder - which affects millions of Americans.

ADHD Awareness Month, sponsored by the Attention Deficit Disorder Association and observed each October, highlights the latest research and clinical studies with the goal of bringing more effective treatments. Its guiding principle is that life can be better for those with ADHD and for those who love or work with someone with ADHD.

October is Mental Health Awareness Month
Mental Health Basics: Types of Mental Illness, Diagnosis, Treatment, and More

Mental health refers to your emotional and psychological well-being. Having good mental health helps you lead a relatively happy and healthy life. It helps you demonstrate resilience and the ability to cope in the face of life's adversities.
Your mental health can be influenced by a variety of factors, including life events or even your genetics.
There are many strategies that can help you establish and keep good mental health. These can include:
  • keeping a positive attitude
  • staying physically active
  • helping other people
  • getting enough sleep
  • eating a healthy diet
  • asking for professional help with your mental health if you need it
  • socializing with people whom you enjoy spending time with
  • forming and using effective coping skills to deal with your problems
A mental illness is a broad term which encompasses a wide variety of conditions which affect the way you feel and think. It can also affect your ability to get through day-to-day life. Mental illnesses can be influenced by several different factors, including:
  • genetics
  • environment
  • daily habits
  • biology

National Health Education Week - October 21-25, 2019

Education is the key to healthy communities. National Health Education Week (NHEW) promotes health education and the role it plays in keeping us strong. It's observed the third week of every October. The Society for Public Health Education co-sponsors the week along with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Why National Health Education Week is Important

1. Education is best
The more we know about our health the better we can take care of ourselves. National Health Education Week promotes deeper understanding of our health issues - and encourages us to rely on health care educators to stay informed about how to maintain good health.

2. Educators are important
National Health Education Week reminds us of the importance of health care educators and the contribution they make to the health of our communities. Health care educators share critical knowledge that can help us live better lives.

3. Opportunities for action
National Health Education Week provides opportunities for citizens to get involved in promoting good health. Each day of the week focuses on a different theme, such as gun violence, or the impact of inequality on individual health. The week offers events and other opportunities for involvement.
