The Dementia Nomenclature Initiative aims to address the challenges in neurodegenerative disease terminology, which have hindered clinical care, research, and therapeutic development. To standardize language usage for various purposes, including research, clinical practice, and public health, the initiative organized working groups involving clinicians, researchers, and the public. By conducting a literature review and gathering input through focus groups, they developed a framework that distinguishes clinical syndromic presentations from underlying disease processes, providing a clearer understanding of conditions like Alzheimer's disease, frontotemporal degeneration, dementia with Lewy bodies, and vascular cognitive impairment dementia.
