Dear Friends:
Fall is right around the corner. As summer comes to an end, we hope that you will take some time to enjoy these last moments of long days, outdoor cooking, county fairs, and warm temperatures.
The change of seasons is a great time for a caregiver checkup, a time for personal self-reflection. Consider taking a cue from nature and spending a moment four times a year
for an honest appraisal of your emotional and physical health.
As a caregiver, w
hat would you like to improve doing? What are you great at? Have things become more or less difficult from this time last year? Are you taking care of yourself? If not, what are the obstacles keeping you from practicing self-care? Do you need to hold a family meeting?
Write down your questions and answers, and compare these season to season and over time, year to year. It will not only serve as a reminder to practice self-care, but will also document your personal caregiving journey, and how far you've come.
Sincerely,
|

As seniors age, mobility can become limited, or even lost altogether. Helping a person, who has difficulty moving on their own, walking, or
transitioning from a standing to a sitting position, can cause strain or injury due to incorrect technique.
This
FCA Tip Sheet
offers advice on how to safely and efficiently transfer a loved one. A demonstration can be viewed online in English and Spanish on FCA’s YouTube channel.

Feeding and Nutrition (for Dementia)
When taking care of someone with dementia, family and friends must pay particular attention to feeding and nutrition. This FCA Tip Sheet will give a number of
pointers
including what kinds of food to serve, how to choose the right vessels to serve them, and how to convince someone who is reluctant to eat.

Three Ways to Work From Home and Be a Caregiver, Too
For the many caregivers that work from home, h
ome-based healthcare might seem like an ideal arrangement. Instead of taking a loved one to a medical office, the medical professionals come to you. There are however trade-offs for this convenience
.
Joanne Cleaver, writing in
Next Avenue explains some of the
planning and organization
required for caregivers to successfully use
h
ome-based healthcare.
This article also includes advice from FCA’s Jo McCord on whether you should quit your job to be a full–time caregiver.

Personality Change May Be Early Sign of Dementia, Experts Say
In a New York Times article, Pam Belluck writes about a possible new diagnostic tool for detecting dementia. Neuropsychiatrists and researchers have put together a questionnaire that lists different changes in behavior. If a patient exhibits any of these behavioral changes, the change is “fundamental” in nature, and lasts at least six months, they may be an indicator of the early onset of dementia.
