Vol. 7, No. 7
July 18, 2016
Dear Friends:

Caregiving is a universal occupation. At FCA, we strive to offer a variety of quality and innovative programs and services to meet the needs of the diverse family caregivers we serve. We do our utmost to advocate for and provide information to caregivers on a local, state, and national level, as well as provide services and counseling at the local level in the San Francisco Bay Area.

This month, Connections would like to highlight some resources for caregivers whose primary language isn’t English. FCA has a number of fact and tip sheets in Spanish, Chinese (simplified and traditional), Korean, and Vietnamese.  For Spanish speaking caregivers, we have an archived webinar on managing stress. This month, FCA has partnered with Easter Seals for a military caregiver webinar . Our annual Spanish language Latino Forum will take place on October 1 in San Francisco, so please stay tuned for more details. FCA also provides information, assistance, and counselling in Spanish to San Francisco Bay Area caregivers, and has a monthly support group in Spanish in San Francisco.  For monolingual Chinese and Japanese speaking caregivers,  FCA has partnered with other organizations to provide assistance and information in the San Francisco Bay Area. This issue also features in our events section, a conference in Mandarin for dementia caregivers.

Sincerely,

Calvin Hu

QUOTE OF THE MONTH
“There are those of us who are always about to live. We are waiting until things change, until there is more time, until we are less tired, until we get a promotion, until we settle down / until, until, until. It always seems as if there is some major event that must occur in our lives before we begin living.”

— George Sheehan, physician, author, and runner

INFORMATION YOU CAN USE
Emotional Side of Caregiving

Part of the caregiving journey can be the wide range of emotions caregivers experience. Some of these feelings are positive, like love, dedication, and patience. However there are other emotions, that while no less valid, are thought of as negative such as ambivalence, jealousy, and feelings of loss. Readers may find our fact sheet , the Emotional Side of Caregiving,  helpful for learning skills to manage difficult emotions.

ARTICLES FOR CAREGIVERS
Too Old for Sex? Not at This Nursing Home

Winnie Hu, in an article for The New York Times, details the very human story of adults in nursing homes having or wanting to have sex. Decades ago, sex was a taboo subject at nursing homes,  but with more baby boomers as residents, a new generation of seniors has pushed sex to the fo refront. Increasingly, nursing homes have specific policies about sex for residents, and some even run their own in-facility dating service. Despite this new openness and gradual change in culture, many of the same complications of the past remain, such as concerns of dementia, infidelity, and the objections of family.
Our Weird Future of Loving Robotic Pets

Ali Wunderman, writing for Quartz, explains some of the background behind “robo-pets.” These animatronic creations are d
esigned for individuals who might benefit from the companionship a pet provides, but are unable to properly care for an animal. While there are some moral and philosophical arguments against robo-pets, and no long-term studies have been conducted on their benefits, these artificial companions  appear to bring out the same feelings that the genuine article do.
