November is National Family Caregivers Month. This year is particularly solemn as COVID-19 has made being a family caregiver so much more difficult. Worries about the safety of using paid in-home caregivers, shuttered adult day programs, layoffs, and less effective self-care regimens and coping techniques are some of the ways COVID-19 has made 2020 an extremely challenging year for family caregivers.
With the disease disrupting nearly every aspect of everyday life for caregivers, FCA has been working hard to support them as their caregiving needs evolve. For caregivers across the country, we hope you will take advantage of our online resource center CareNav, and our many fact and tip sheets, videos, webinars. Caregivers in the San Francisco Bay Area should contact our Caregiver Resource Center for consultations and resources, while our friends in other states can consult FCA’s Family Care Navigator for resources local to them.

FCA Executive Director Kathleen Kelly Named in Care 100 Most Influential People in Care
Care 100 lists the innovators leading the way in reimagining and humanizing the care system. FCA is proud to announce that Executive Director Kathleen Kelly was named in this year’s list:
Kathleen Kelly has been fighting for 25 years to make caregiving’s essential and universal nature visible to everyone. The Family Caregiver Alliance is a lifeline for family caregivers, including an online listing with information on services and benefits in each state. They also have a research arm, the National Center on Caregiving, which is surfacing vital information about the future of family caregiving for policymakers and innovators.

Navigating Your Caregiving Journey: Tips, Resources, and Self-Care
Do you have questions about what a family caregiver is or if you are one? In celebration of National Family Caregivers Month, join the California Caregiver Resource Centers to learn more about caregiving, how to make sure you care for yourself in the process, and get connected with valuable local resources for your specific situation. This webinar will feature caregiving experts from across California, including FCA’s Christina Irving and Amanda Hartrey.

Let’s Get Away Together Returns for a Winter Series: "Music, Travel, and Art"
This series is comprised of interactive travel activity sessions with each week focusing on a new place or cultural activity, while incorporating storytelling, music, poetry writing, and/or a simple craft. Each session will include a follow-up message filled with tips, activities, and recipes for families to continue to enjoy after the virtual trip. The focus of each group is to explore a new world, experience a variety of engaging opportunities, and enjoy a sense of camaraderie and community.
Let’s Get Away Together is intended to be an enjoyable activity for family caregivers and the person they care for. Those receiving care who are able to participate in the discussion and activities are encouraged to attend with their family caregiver.

Reimagine Festival - Dying to Talk With Kirsten Johnson
Dying to Talk is a three-part series hosted by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Kirsten Johnson and inspired by her newly released Netflix documentary Dick Johnson is Dead. Kirsten will draw out wisdom and surprises from guests Deepak Chopra, Dr. Eelco Wijdicks, and Josie Oppenheim in an attempt to understand how we care, live, die, mourn, and remember.
This series is presented by Family Caregiver Alliance, Museum of the Moving Image, and Rooftop Films.

The San Francisco LGBTQ Dementia Care Project Upcoming Trainings
The Alzheimer’s Association, in partnership with Openhouse and FCA, offers free training to health and social service providers on the care needs of LGBTQ seniors living with dementia and their care partners.
Tier 1: LGBTQ Dementia Care Training
Training topics include an overview of dementia, understanding the needs and challenges unique to the LGBTQ dementia population, and recommendations for working with LGBTQ individuals living with dementia and their caregivers.
When: Thursday, December 3, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon (PT)

Tier 2: Effective Communication Strategies
As people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias progress in their journey and the ability to use words is lost, caregivers need new ways to connect. Join us to learn to decode verbal and behavioral messages and identify strategies to help you improve communication at each stage of the disease.
This is a follow-up course for those who participated in Tier 1 LGBTQ Dementia Care Training

Caregiver Resource Center Classes
The California Caregiver Resource Centers (CRC) serve families and caregivers of adults affected by chronic and debilitating health conditions (FCA is the San Francisco Bay Area CRC). FCA is now hosting a calendar of classes, workshops, and events compiled from each of the 11 CRCs and open to family caregivers across the country.

Motivating Loved Ones
How to Communicate Better and Work Together to Help Those You Care For Stay Active and Engaged
This webinar provides family caregivers an opportunity to learn the basics of Motivational Interviewing, a proven method for increasing engagement. When practiced by caregivers, Motivational Interviewing can help a care recipient become more active and involved in their health and well-being.
Participants will learn practical strategies to help encourage and inspire care recipients to be more physically active, participate in rewarding activities, improve their diet, tidy up around the house, and more.

Families with Aging Parents: Difficult Conversations Just Got Easier!
Being a family caregiver is a difficult job. And when it involves an older parent, caregiving often includes the entire family. This webinar covers the basics of conducting a family meeting and how to address the challenges and disputes that can arise during the care of an older family member.
Participants will learn the questions to ask that are proven to increase understanding, how to identify barriers to productive conversation and how to overcome them, about resources related to informed decision-making, and how to include an elder’s voice.

Dementia 101
Caring for someone living with dementia poses many unique challenges for family caregivers. This class will provide a basic understanding of dementia and how it affects an individual. Dementia 101 will also include some tips for caregivers on how to cope with these changes.
This class is open to family caregivers in the San Francisco Bay Area (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties). This class is specifically for family caregivers, not providers.
