April 2025 Connections
Information for caregivers to help children thrive!
| | At Developmental FX, we believe that every child deserves the chance to experience the magic of camp. That’s why we are so excited about launching Camp DFX this summer, and so proud of our long-standing support of Camp Jabiru, a unique, week-long camp in Australia run by The Sensory Gym®.
Inspired by Camp Avanti (see below for more on Avanti) in the U.S., Camp Jabiru is specially designed for children with neurodevelopmental differences, combining the excitement of a traditional camp with individualized therapeutic support.
| | For years, our Executive Director, Tracy Stackhouse, has played a key role in supporting Camp Jabiru. As a member of the clinical support team and co-leader of the camp’s practicum program, Tracy has helped guide and train therapists at camp since 2013. We have also sent other DFX therapists to work as clinical support and camp group leaders at Jabiru! Pictured at Camp Jabiru are DFX team members Juliana Padilla, MS, OTR/L; Tracy Stackhouse, MA, OTR/L; and Hannah Burke, PhD, OTR/L. | | | Camp Jabiru integrates clinical reasoning frameworks developed by Tracy and her colleagues. These frameworks provide a structured yet flexible approach for therapists to use in their work with campers. Ultimately this means more campers have the opportunity to enjoy camp adventures in a way that meets their individual needs! | | |
This collaboration between The Sensory Gym® and Developmental FX has been mutually beneficial. Using the DFX clinical reasoning frameworks at camp has allowed therapists to refine their thinking to best support each individual camper. Use of the tool within this intensive, hands-on camp context has also helped Tracy and her team refine the reasoning framework itself. This not only supports the campers at Jabiru, but also has enhanced the therapeutic process we use at Developmental FX every day.
We are honored to be part of this incredible program and to witness the joy and growth it brings to so many children and families.

On the horizon...
Camp Avanti, the camp that inspired Camp Jabiru, will run again this July. New this year, Camp Avanti is also adopting the clinical reasoning frameworks from Developmental FX! It is exciting to see the growing interest in our tools, knowing the impact they will have on the campers and their overall camp experience. Additionally, each of the dozens of therapists involved at Camp Avanti will take their new skill of using our clinical reasoning frameworks back to their practices and communities across the US and beyond, furthering the impact.
| | APRIL IS AUTISM ACCEPTANCE MONTH | | Spreading misinformation about the causes of autism is harmful, ableist, and disrespectful. Families struggle because of lack of access to services, cuts to their insurance coverage, and judgement from uninformed people and misguided policymakers. | | |
Developmental FX is working every day to expand understanding of neurodiversity.
We walk beside the families we serve and believe that everyone deserves to be seen, understood, and supported. People with autism are beautiful humans - children, siblings, parents, neighbors. They are engaged in their communities as artists, lawyers, poets, scientists, teachers, parents, grocery store workers, therapists, accountants, builders, dancers, computer programmers, and much more.

We are excited to read this new book from DFX Board Member Karen Onderko and Dr. Stephen Porges! Here’s Karen signing Tracy’s copy!
In “Safe and Sound: A Polyvagal Approach for Connection, Change, and Healing,” Onderko and Dr. Porges share case studies to help deepen your understanding of The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP), a therapy based in Polyvagal Theory - including one from DFX’s own Tracy Stackhouse.

| | We invite you to join us to celebrate a bright future for DFX and the children we serve. Our 2025 Soiree will be held at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, from 6:00 - 9:00pm.
| | | | DFX is working to create systemic change by establishing a culture of engaged belonging in which children of all abilities and backgrounds will thrive. | | | | |
