July Worship Series: Rediscovering Christ’s Heart in our Faith
July 25
Celebration – the Joy of the Father
Luke 15: 20-24, 32

Zephaniah 3:17 is a verse that is a hidden gem (also one of Pastor Paul’s favorite verses!). It talks about God’s joy. Nehemiah 8:10 also talks about YHWH’s joy. Does God actually celebrate us? Can we actually bring pleasure to God? One of the most neglected understandings of God is His celebration – His laughter. Understanding God’s celebration can give us a fresh appreciation of laughter and times of joy – even as He joins in our laughter, and we join in His!
The series:
July 4
Luke 15:1-2, 11-12, 28
July 11
The journey to and from the “far country” – the younger son
Luke 15: 13-20
July 18
Living in the “far country” while being at home – the older son
Luke 15: 25-31
We are sad to announce....

that Thomas Mellan has taken another position. We will continue our search for an organist.
Last week...

Thank you to all who worship with us in person and online!

Christian clichés (re)visited!!

It’s summer. People are on vacation. So we will focus on something a little “lighter"... a look at what is (inaccurately) known as “Bumper Sticker Theology,” or otherwise seen as Christian clichés. We will discover how or when these quaint sayings came about, and then how to rectify them. What version would accurately reflect scripture and be encouraging/challenging to our following Christ?

Hope International and Missionaries

This year’s Peach Festival will be held on Saturday, August 28 from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. All proceeds raised will benefit Hope International and the three missionary teams we support working in Honduras, Asia Minor and India. Our 2021 Peach Festival will feature:
·       Pancake Breakfast
·       Book sale
·       Car Wash
·       Bake Sale
·       Live Music
·       Information tables that will showcase small groups and ministries

If you wish to volunteer or prepare BAKED GOODS for the bake sale, please email George Witter at with how you can help!

The book sale is back!

After a long rest, the Peach Festival is returning, and so is the used book sale.

Books, games, puzzles, DVDs, and vinyl records are acceptable and welcome. They may be left at the church from August 2 through August 25 on the designated table in Overholt Hall.

Please do NOT bring text books, sets of encyclopedias, inappropriate books, magazines, out of date electronic material, or books in bad condition.

Books will be on sale from August 3 through August 28. Payment will be in the form of cash (exact change only or an extra donation to the church), checks, or an IOU. Someone will be available on Sundays and the day of the Peach Festival. Otherwise, payment is on the honor system and can be turned in to the church office or slid under the office door. (Place cash or IOU form in envelopes provided on the donation table.) Any IOUs must be paid for on or before August 28. Remaining books will be donated to Buckingham Friends Peace Project at the conclusion of the Peach Festival. All proceeds benefit Hope International and our missionaries.

Financial Report YTD June 2021
Submitted by Barbara Miller, Finance Chairperson & Karen Sablyak, Treasurer
***DUMC continues to experience a monthly operating deficit (e.g., expenses exceed the income) before special giving as shown in the chart above in red. However, our congregation has been truly generous with extraordinary giving with yet another special unrestricted gift of $26K received in June to be used towards operating expenses. As mentioned in previous reports, at the end of 2020 we received an unrestricted donation which allowed us to begin the year with a healthy cash balance. Then, again, in January & February, as you can see in the table above, members have stepped above and beyond the normal monthly giving and provided the church with additional gifts to support our operations (noted as special giving). We are so grateful to God for his blessings on the hearts of our church members.

As many of you know, the summer months can be financially challenging for DUMC and we ask that you prayerfully consider continuing your monthly/weekly giving during these months as we continue to work towards achieving our goal of positive monthly cash flow so we can retain a consistent healthy cash balance. Expenses will be increasing as we bring back staff so that DUMC’s music program is fully operational in the fall. This is an important commitment for our church as organ music, choirs (children, youth and adult), and handbells are all vital programs in building our church family.

DUMC is open for in-person worship and meetings, and we WELCOME YOU BACK. We hope to see you at the Summer Fest on Saturday, July 31, and the Peach Festival on August 28.

Thank you to our staff and the congregation for their continued support…but thank you most of all to our Heavenly Father…for He has provided and hears our prayers!

Every good and perfect gift is from above,
coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights… James 1:17
Lay Leader Insight: COVID Update
Laurie Lewis, RN, Minister of Visitation, Lay Leader
This week I need to put on my Health Official hat and give a brief update on COVID.

Only 47% of eligible persons in Bucks County are fully vaccinated. Unfortunately, cases have gone up in Bucks County 250% in the last 14 days. This is mainly due to the spread among unvaccinated persons.

Herd immunity that will protect our communities starts when 70% of the people have the vaccine. That’s how smallpox, mumps and measles were wiped out. We are not even close, so COVID is still spreading.

Please talk to your healthcare provider about getting the vaccine. For most people, the benefits far outweigh the risks of having COVID. Many people who have had COVID have long-lasting health problems, including heart and lung issues.

At DUMC we are still using our precautions, with cleaning and good air flow in all areas where people gather. We look forward to restarting our wonderful choirs and bells in September. It has been a blessing to gather together in worship, singing with full hearts and full voices.

Let’s work together to keep this pandemic at bay.

“ that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
2 Timothy 3:17
Volunteer Opportunities
A search is in progress for a man wanted by the Handbell Choir. So far, he has eluded detection, but he may be in the area. It is hoped he will turn himself in to the bell authorities, who are on the look-out. He is believed to be between 20 and 80 years old, with a desire to ring bass bells. If he has a prior record in another choir, that would be great. However, if he has no prior record, but just a desire to try something new, there are no qualifications necessary. Training is available.

Kingdom Growth Committee
Kingdom Growth Committee mission:
to encourage our congregation to deepen our relationship with God and to heed His call to do great things for God by promoting activities that will expand His Kingdom.
Expect Great Things from God. Attempt Great Things for God.

The Kingdom Growth Committee is devoted to encouraging and considering possibilities. Anything is possible through our Lord Jesus Christ. You don’t have to look far to see His hand at work within our church during COVID:

  • DUMC made it through a tough year with the unexpected funding of the PPP loan and the generosity of our congregation to support our financial mission. We entered 2021 with a cash surplus.
  • By allowing us to pivot to virtual worship via live streaming, providing a continuous worship experience when COVID prevented face-to-face worship opportunities…and now providing the face-to-face worship experience we have been craving.

As Christians, we expect that God will care for us, that He has a plan for us, and that He will answer our prayers. Our role in our pact with God is to meet Him halfway by: 1) growing in our faith and encouraging others to grow as Christians; and 2) attempting to do great things as individuals, and as His church, to help expand His Kingdom. This is the mission of the Kingdom Growth Committee—to encourage our congregation to deepen our relationship with God and to heed His call to do great things for God by promoting activities that will expand His Kingdom. We need your help…

The Kingdom Growth Committee is seeking those who feel called to help us grow God’s Kingdom and who are willing to serve on the committee. As they say, many hands make light work…and we could use some extra hands. Please contact George Witter at if you are interested in learning more.
July Mission of the month: Bucks County Opportunity Council
Outreach Ministries is excited to partner with the Bucks County Opportunity Council (BCOC) Self-Sufficiency Program for our July mission of the month. The BCOC aims to “reduce poverty and partner with the community to promote economic self-sufficiency for everyone in Bucks County.” Their vision is to make the community a bridge out of poverty.
At this time, there are 38,508 people living in poverty here in Bucks County; 6,991 of them are children. The adults may have lost jobs, gotten divorced, or been widowed. In order to pay their bills, they have wiped out their savings accounts. These are the examples of the people BCOC tries to help. At this time, BCOC, has only been able to assist 30% of those in need.
Back to School Backpack Drive!
Do you remember the first day of the school year? Remember being excited about going in with your new clothes and backpacks? There are some who don’t have the luxuries of these new items. Can we help out?

Once again, DUMC will be supporting the children served by the Methodist Home for Children in Philadelphia with backpacks and school supplies. The next time you head to Target and places like it, please consider picking up some supplies to help out some children in need.

Look for the bins under the portico or in the lobby of DUMC now through the month of August to collect new backpacks and new school supplies. Simply drop them off and we will make sure they are delivered to the children. No time to shop? Contact me to make a donation and I will do the shopping for you.

Thank you in advance for your donations, and God Bless.
