AUGUST Worship Theme:
Quotes That Make No Sense,
and How the Bible Answers Them
| |
Ever wonder what a particular quote meant? Or why some seemingly profound quotes actually contradict each other, like: “too many cooks spoil the broth,” and “many hands make light work”. This month we will look at some quotes that are used rather frequently--but upon closer scrutiny may not make much sense--and how the Bible frequently teaches just the opposite.
August 7: "Love is Blind"
August 14: "Give Them a Taste of Their Own Medicine"
August 21: "Rules are Made to be Broken"
August 28: "Don't Worry, Be Happy"

As of July 16, you are now able to call, text, or chat 988 from anywhere in the United States to be connected to a trained crisis counselor.
988 offers 24/7 access to trained crisis counselors who can help people experiencing mental health-related distress. That could be:
- Thoughts of suicide
- Mental health or substance use crisis, or
- Any other kind of emotional distress
| | |
People can call or text 988 or chat 988lifeline.org for themselves or if they are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support.
988 serves as a universal entry point so that no matter where you live in the United States, you can reach a trained crisis counselor who can help.

Results of last week's "QOTW"
Thanks to those who participated last week!
Some of us have been part of DUMC for many years--others more recently. We thought it might be fun to see which of the senior pastors you first remember when you became part of the congregation. Which senior pastor do you first remember?
- Sunil Balasundaram (2019-present) - 4 (6.5%)
- Michael Murphy (2004-2019) - 20 (32.3%)
- Steve McComas (2003-2004) - 3 (4.8%)
- Brian Cloud (1987-2003) - 15 (24.2%)
- Charles Whittaker (1976-1987) - 11 (17.7%)
- Rowland Carlson (1964-1976) - 6 (9.7%)
- John Althouse (1963-1964) - 1 (1.6%)
- Paul Corson (1953-1963) - 2 (3.2%)
- Thomas Young (1951-1952) - 0
- Revs Palmer, Davidson, McCartney, Smith, Shalkop, Lewis, Weller, Prouse - 0
One person who remembered Rev. Paul Corson shared, "I remember Reverend Corson so vividly from my early childhood. He was larger than life to me, and so kind. He loved children. My parents also thought the world of him. He had a daughter named Ruth and a son named Paul. It’s nice to reminisce."

It is with some sadness but great appreciation that we say farewell to Emily Mandia, who has served as our Pro-Presenter Designer (creating what you see on our worship screens) for the past year and as a volunteer on our Sunday morning AVL team even before that. Emily graduated from high school in June and is heading to University of Pittsburgh in a couple of weeks. Thank you, Emily, for your excellent work! We will miss you and wish you God's richest blessings in this next part of your journey. | | |
Lay Leader Insights:
Growing in Faith
|
Looking around at the troubles of the world, it is easy to feel discouraged. We ask ourselves, "What can I do to really make a difference?" The size and scope of world hunger, wars, and homelessness can feel overwhelming.
But God doesn't expect you to single-handedly take on these problems. He has equipped certain people for specific tasks, and when we all come together, we can make a difference.

Finance Report for the Six Months Ended June 30 |
God provides!
June was better than expected with the receipt of $25K of special giving which allowed DUMC to nearly achieve breakeven for the month with only a ($7.5K) deficit for the month. However, regular giving was only $46K which is the lowest we’ve seen in a month this year.

DUMC Night Out:
Christian Comedian
Saturday, September 17
6:30 pm
| | |
On September 12, our two adult handbell groups will begin their fall rehearsals.
Summer is a good time for new ringers to come in for a few private sessions to learn some basic bell techniques. Reading music is not a requirement, but it is helpful. So if you are interested in ringing, this is a good time to try it with no pressure. You just might find a new fun activity for yourself.
