Lay Leader Insights: God's Waiting Room
By Laurie Lewis, RN, Minister of Visitation, Lay Leader
Do you feel like you are in God’s waiting room? Others seem to be going ahead while you wait. In your eyes nothing is happening. Time passes slowly. The wait can be lonely, frustrating even. “When will it be my turn?,” you ask.

As Christians, we are set apart to do God’s good will. But it can feel like being set sitting alone at the middle school lunchroom table. We think God has forgotten.

We must remember that God is putting a plan in motion that involves many other people and situations. He is working all things together for our good and his glory.

Stay alert. At just the right time God will call on you to step into a situation and you will realize the timing is perfect. Nothing is wasted. God’s light shines in your darkness.

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:5

January Mission of the Month: Youth Missions
Our youth missions program allows our students to give back to their community and go out into the world to be God’s hands and feet. Our middle and high school students can participate in mission trips over the summer that allow them to explore a range of service projects. Students can volunteer in soup kitchens, nursing homes, homeless shelters, and help run camps for kids. They can also help senior citizens and families in need with landscaping and yard work, help build ramps for wheelchairs, and so much more!
While we plan to stay local this year, our students will still have the opportunity to make a difference in the world around them. These mission trips are life-changing and truly help our students grow in faith to serve Christ.
Kingdom Growth: Each of Us Has a Role
DUMC’s Kingdom Growth Committee is dedicated to helping us understand what role we can play in growing God’s Kingdom on earth. God asks us to be his hands and feet here on earth, matching our time, talent and treasure against the myriad needs our church, community, and nation face. God doesn’t intend for us to be spectators, but rather actively involved in doing good works that will bless others, whether here are DUMC, at work, within our homes or within the broader community.

Not sure what role you can play? A great start it to reach out to Pastor Sunil or small group chairs at DUMC to learn more about what our small groups do and how your skills and interests can help further their individual missions. In speaking with those actively involved in God's work here at DUMC, you will find they serve not only to bless others but to enrich their own lives spiritually. What role can you play?
Opportunities to Serve
Soup Supper Coordinator Needed

Lenten Soup Suppers are an important part of DUMC's tradition and fellowship. While Christmas is not far behind us, Lent begins on March 3 and will be here before we know it!

We're looking for someone who would be willing to coordinate our soup suppers. If you would be willing to serve as the coordinator, please contact Laurie Lewis for more information.
Communion Volunteer Needed

Once a month we share Communion at each worship service. Volunteers to set-up the trays are needed. Training is provided. Are you looking for a way to serve? Contact Laurie Lewis. Thank you!
Blood Drive Host(s) Needed
DUMC is currently looking for one or two people to help with the Red Cross Blood Drives that we host. This plea will affect how often or if we continue to host the blood drives at DUMC. All tasks can be done from home, with a computer, in very little time (1-2 hours) during the month leading up to a blood drive. Easy to learn. Your commitment would be 1 or 2 times per year.
Interested or curious to learn more without obligation? Please contact: Sue Holihan at or Lisa Ament at or (215) 514-3635.
Volunteer for Code Blue
Join us!!!

In-person training:
Sunday, January 16,
12:30-2:30 pm at DUMC
Driver training immediately after.

For more information and on-line training:
Code Blue provides overnight shelter and meals for the homeless on cold nights in the winter. The shelter can only open if volunteers fill all the shifts and positions. There has already been at least one cold night this winter that the shelter could not open due to a lack of volunteer staffing.

There are 14 positions to fill every night, so there is always a time slot to fit your schedule. There are van drivers and attendants in the morning and evening, evening check-in slots, and morning cleaning jobs. Of course, there are also 10:00 pm-2:30 am and 2:00-6:00 am overnight slots that primarily monitor while the guest sleeps.

There will be training here at DUMC Sunday, January 16, from 12:30-2:30. Or, you can do training and registration completely online

If you are interested but hesitant, come to the training session, contact Mae O'Brien at or call Randy Hume (evenings or weekends) at 267-614-5940. We could even partner up for a van or cleanup slot if that helped you get started.

Best Regards, Randy Hume - Mission and Outreach Committee Chair

DUMC Library - Curl up with a good book!
Did you know that DUMC has a library? It is located in Rooms 14/15 and is a wonderful resource for individual use as well as group leaders. There are sections devoted to parenting, death and dying, spiritual growth, and men’s and women’s studies, and more. Books with tags on the spine have cards inside that can be signed out and left on the round table.

New for 2022 is a nonfiction bookshelf. You can’t miss it, as it is that tallest bookshelf in the room. Included are books on such subjects as prayer, Bible, grace, and personal growth. You can choose from many authors including Robert Schuller, Billy Graham, Joel Osteen, Charles Stanley and Max Lucado. Books here are for you to take and return when you have finished reading.

Come select a good book that you can curl up with this winter!
