Fall Retreat
Saturday, October 19
8:30 am - 12:00 pm, Worship Center
When was the last time you found yourself in a difficult position stuck for the right words? Perhaps a friend shared some tragic news, you were in a receiving line at a funeral, or you walked into a hospital room with sweaty palms to visit someone. This seminar will give you the insight needed for conversations with people who are hurting, whether you are in Starbucks, someone’s home, the hospital, at church, or at a funeral. We will use role-playing examples so you are better equipped for difficult visits. While it is not required, you may want to purchase the book “What To Say To People Who Are Hurting” by Laurie Lewis, from Amazon.
All are welcome! To register, or for any questions, please email Laurie Lewis.

DUMC Family Directory
Are you in the church directory? Do you want to be? If so, please contact the church office at (215) 348-5224 to update your preferences. We do not publish the directory online for privacy reasons, but we do have hard copies available in the church office.
We update the directory as needed and print it quarterly. This is useful for members to stay connected with one another, send a greeting, etc. This is distributed only to members of the congregation and being listed in the directory is completely optional. You are invited to opt in to be included in the next updated version (by default, you will NOT be included, so please indicate your desire to be listed).
Thank you,
DUMC

Financial Report for the Eight Months Ended August 31, 2024
Submitted by:
Allen Mason (Finance Chairperson) and Karen Sablyak (Treasurer)
| |
SUMMARY: Negative Cash Flow for the month with many members giving less or nothing during the month – likely due to vacations. However, DUMC’s expenses do not decline, thus the shortfall. It was a busy summer with the Youth mission trip, VBS, Iron Pigs trip, and Pocono Plateau overnight summer camp, just to mention a few happenings in the life of DUMC. Please continue to support our active DUMC ministries and pray for God’s guidance.
Giving: Income for August was $47K including $2,250 for COG – the special giving request letter sent out to all members. On a YTD basis, income is ($189K) less than budget which is partially offset by the generous special giving of $73K.
Disbursements: Our disbursements for August were $12K less than budget – Note that there is no Connectional Ministry expense as the Administrative Council Board approved withholding this amount from the Conference until DUMC’s finances improve. YTD disbursements are $77K less than budget as we continue to monitor expenses. REJOICE!
Net Cash (Deficit): We suffered negative cash flow in August of ($29K) and still negative ($82K) YTD.
Please keep DUMC and our finances in your prayers. GOD’S PLANS ARE MORE THAN WE CAN IMAGINE!!
"For what thanksgiving can we return to God for you, for all the joy that we feel for your sake before our God." 1 Thessalonians 3:9

Pastor's Corner:
Love God, Love People
As followers of Jesus, we are unique in how we lead and serve. What sets us apart is not only our diverse giftings, skills, and abilities, but the deeper reason behind our service—Jesus’ example and His calling on our lives. “What is that calling?” you may be wondering. That calling is to love God and love people, as Jesus tells us in Matthew 22:37-39:
“37 Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

Lay Leader Insights:
GOD REFINES US
Has life ever felt like too much to bear? Difficulties seem to pile up with no relief in sight. Life moves ever faster as we age. We wonder why the God who loves us doesn't make things easier.
Suffering is a part of our earthly experience and cannot be avoided. God uses our struggles to teach us valuable lessons, like perseverance, building character, and patience. He allows free will, and sometimes, because of sin, we have to deal with the consequences of flawed decisions.

October Mission of the Month:
HOPE INTERNATIONAL
| | |
Our Mission of the Month for October is Hope International. Hope International supports savings groups and microfinancing at the local level in many countries in eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, and Central & South America. Their model for savings groups encourages a local group to pool their savings and then decide what investments to support. It may be a sewing machine to for a woman to start a business, better farm tools, or paying school fees. These are loans that are paid to individuals in the community. They pay back the loans with interest, so the group’s investments grow. The entire process is managed by the savings group, with instruction and coaching from a Hope International regional field worker. Hope International also does microfinancing, where Hope is” the bank” giving the loan. Both models provide opportunities for people in regions and situations where loans are not available or affordable.
Plan to listen to the sermon on Sunday, October 13 presented by Brian Boycan, Senior Development Officer of Hope International. Learn about and pray for Hope at https://www.hopeinternational.org/. Please support Hope International during the month of October.

Caring for Friends is holding a special meal-packing event on Sunday, October 13 at 12:30 pm (*new date due to scheduling conflicts for several people who really wanted to attend), in the DUMC kitchen. This event is in honor of our dear friend, Gianna, who was a beloved member of our CFF team. All who want to join us are welcome.
Gianna liked pasta dishes, so as a tribute to her, we will be packing a meatball and pepperoni pasta bake (recipe below), frozen vegetables, and fruit crisp. The peach dump cake recipe is included, but please feel free to use any recipe you like.

Wrapping Presence
Wrapping Presence is an organization that brings the joy of Christmas into area nursing homes. The residents are given the opportunity to “shop” for holiday gifts for their loved ones, which are wrapped by volunteers. The residents also enjoy delicious cookies and visit with Santa. This is all at no charge to the residents.
DUMC will once again partner with Wrapping Presence to bring the joy of the holidays to Liberty Pointe nursing/rehabilitation facility in Doylestown.
I would like to extend an invitation to everyone to join us in this wonderful mission.
Volunteer opportunities with Wrapping Presence are:

College & Young Adult Online Small Group
Watch Video
We are working on starting up a small group for college age/young adults that will meet online, Wednesday evenings from 6:00 - 7:00 pm. The reason we are going the online route is so that we all can get together no matter where we are in the world (e.g., college, living out-of-state, or right here in Doylestown, but you don’t want to leave your house). Our meetings will include video-based studies and discussion about topics that are relevant to real life. Adulting is hard, but life is better when we figure it out together. We hope you will check out this group and grow together in the community.
This group will likely begin in September (stay tuned for a start date) and will be led by Prerna BalaEddy and Pastor Paul. Here is a video from Prerna introducing herself and explaining a little more about the group, what we’ll be discussing, and more. If you would like to join us, or if you have any questions, please contact Pastor Paul.
