The holiday season is now in full swing. For many it’s a time of anticipation and excitement, but this time of year can also bring more responsibilities and feelings of grief. Because of the additional demands of the holidays, many family caregivers understandably experience an increase in stress.
For those caregivers looking for help and advice, FCA has articles on holiday caregiving topics including gratitude, stress, and family dynamics. Additionally, FCA’s CareNav is a user-friendly online tool designed to help caregivers manage their difficult work by providing personalized information, support, and resources.

FCA Recognizes Champions of Caregivers for 2022
FCA is excited to announce the recipients of this year’s Champions of Caregivers Award. The awardees have performed outstanding work and made exemplary contributions toward improving the lives of caregivers and their care recipients. From building community-based programs and improving services through technology to ensuring that the caregiver voice informs policy and research initiatives, these champions are making far-reaching impacts for caregivers. This year’s awardees are Jenn Chan, CEO and Founder of Senior Shower Project; Dolores Gallagher-Thompson, Emerita Professor of Research in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine; and Katie Maslow, Visiting Scholar at the Gerontological Society of America.

Cold Weather Safety for Older Adults
Hypothermia can occur when a person’s temperature drops to dangerous levels. This is because the body loses more heat than it produces. Older adults can be more vulnerable to hypothermia because of physiological changes brought on by age. To help caregivers of an older adult guard against the dangers of winter, the National Institute on Aging has written an article on cold weather safety describing the symptoms, signs, and consequences of hypothermia.

Dementia: Is This Dementia and What Does it Mean?
“Dementia” is a widely used term commonly understood to indicate problems of thinking and memory. But dementia is a symptom, not a diagnosis. FCA’s fact sheet explains dementia causing diseases and conditions such as Alzheimer’ s disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and frontotemporal dementia.

Caregiver Resource Center Classes
The California Caregiver Resource Centers (CRC) serve families and caregivers of adults affected by chronic and debilitating health conditions (FCA is the San Francisco Bay Area CRC). FCA is now hosting a calendar of classes, workshops, and events compiled from each of the 11 CRCs and open to family caregivers across the country.

It is common knowledge that most older adults want to “age in place,” that is to live in their home independently. However, there may be a time when this arrangement is no longer safe. A recent study has shown that the number of heart attacks spike in December and January in the United States. There are many reasons for this including the cold, stress, and eating a lot of rich foods. There Must Be A Better Way Than This!
This 2-hour class will help participants understand dementia and the challenging behaviors that sometimes accompany the disease. We will review strategies to help handle these behaviors and help enhance your communication with the person who has dementia.
Registration is only open to non-professional caregivers (family members and friends) who live in the following counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara.
