Help Make a Difference for California’s Unpaid Family Caregivers

Family caregivers and their advocates have a new option to mobilize for California State policies that support unpaid family caregivers--they can join the California Coalition on Family Caregiving (CaCFC).

CaCFC was launched in June 2022 with funding from Archstone Foundation and Community Catalyst to advocate for California policies and services that support diverse unpaid family caregivers and their care recipients. In less than a year, the coalition has grown to 35 members, including caregivers and organizations from our communities. Members voted to support 14 pieces of 2023 California State legislation, including two priority bills, AB 518 (Paid Family Leave for Designated Persons) and SB 616 (Paid Sick and Safe Days). Learn more here.

To join the coalition you can fill out a membership form at https://cacfc.org/get-involved/#apply or email cacfc@usc.edu with any questions.

Services by State: Your One-Stop Search Tool for Family Caregiver Resources in Every State (newly updated)

FCAs Services by State tool helps family caregivers locate public, nonprofit, and private programs and services local to them. Resources include government health and disability programs, legal resources, disease-specific organizations, residential care, and more. Our recent update to our Services by State tool means that its now not only more robust, with more resources and high-quality information than ever before, but has new features that let caregivers easily filter and sort their search criteria for highly tailored results.

In addition to state-level resources, Services by State also links to National Resources for Family Caregivers and provides relevant related resources from within FCAs comprehensive library. It is updated regularly by our caregiver resources specialists, so family caregivers always have the most current information and links at their fingertips.

Recent improvements to this resource tool were made possible through a generous grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

California Department of Aging Statewide Survey of Older Adults

The Community Assessment Survey for Older Adults is designed to help California better understand the contributions that adults 55+ make to their communities. The survey will also focus on the needs and challenges faced by older adults. Feedback will be used to help the State ensure that policies and programs align with California residents’ needs and values.

Starting mid-month, postcards will be randomly mailed to California households with an older adult to participate in the survey online. The survey will also be mailed to these same households. In mid-August, the online survey link will be shared publicly, allowing any interested Californians to participate.

INFORMATION YOU CAN USE

Hot Weather Tips

Normal physiological changes that occur later in life, medications, or a cognitive impairment can inhibit an older person’s ability to tell if they are suffering from unhealthy temperatures. Because of this, caregivers of older adults face additional challenges during warmer months. Read FCA’s tips on how to keep a loved one cool, and how to spot the warning signs of a heat related problem.

Dementia: Is This Dementia and What Does it Mean?

“Dementia” is a widely used term commonly understood to indicate problems of thinking and memory. But dementia is a symptom, not a diagnosis. FCA’s fact sheet explains dementia causing diseases and conditions such as Alzheimer’ s disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and frontotemporal dementia.

Caregiver Resource Center Classes

The California Caregiver Resource Centers (CRC) serve families and caregivers of adults affected by chronic and debilitating health conditions (FCA is the San Francisco Bay Area CRC). FCA is now hosting a calendar of classes, workshops, and events compiled from each of the 11 CRCs and open to family caregivers across the country.

ARTICLES FOR CAREGIVERS

Hospital-at-Home’ Trend Means Family Members Must be Caregivers — Ready or Not

Hospital-at-Home is a service that provides hospital-level care at a patient’s home, instead of a more traditional hospital stay. While not available in every state or at all hospitals, this service has become more common following COVID-19. NPR’s Kat McGowan shares stories of families that have found the experience positive, but also cautions that the effects on family caregivers are not well studied or fully understood.

When the Caregiving Ends: Recovering From Loss, Rebuilding Your Life

While it may be true that all caregiving journeys are unique, the one aspect that does not change is that they all eventually end. When someone being cared for dies, a caregiver may feel complex emotions like relief, guilt, and loss. Next Avenues Connie Baher explores what happens after caregiving ends, with a focus on former caregivers rebuilding their lives, and rediscovering who they are.
