Dear Friends:
A new year is upon us, and with it, the promise of new opportunities and a fresh start. For some of you, this marks your first year as a caregiver—for others, this is just one of many.
Regardless of how long you have been a caregiver, FCA is here to provide information and support. Our website offers fact sheets, videos, webinars, and support groups. You can also find us on social media for the latest articles about caregiving and news about caregiver advocacy locally and nationally. Now that another year has passed, we hope that you will not only continue to provide dedicated care to your family and friends, but to yourselves as well.
Sincerely,
Calvin Hu
Education Coordinator

Evaluation on the California Caregiver Resource Centers’ Service Delivery and System Change
Every year, the Family Caregiver Institute at the UC Davis School of Nursing analyzes data from the California Caregiver Resource Centers (CRCs- FCA is the San Francisco Bay Area CRC). FCA is pleased to share the results of this evaluation in a new report. This data provides important insight on the experiences, demographics, and needs of California family caregivers of adults with cognitive and physical disabilities -- and provides FCA with an additional resource to help us advocate for caregivers locally and nationally. Please click here for key findings from the report.

Cold Weather Safety for Older Adults
Hypothermia can occur when a person’s temperature drops to dangerous levels. This is because the body loses more heat than it produces. Older adults can be more vulnerable to hypothermia because of physiological changes brought on by age. To help caregivers of an older adult guard against the dangers of winter, the National Institute on Aging has written an article on cold weather safety describing the symptoms, signs, and consequences of hypothermia.

Home Away From Home: Relocating Your Parents
Cognitive or physical decline in parents is often first noticed during holiday visits from adult children. An adult child may feel their parents are no longer able to live at home safely, but are unsure how to broach the subject. This FCA fact sheet provides an overview and steps for adult children who think the time has come to move their parents out of their home.

Grief and Loss
Grief is the process of how to accept the unacceptable. Growing up, most of us thought of grief as something that happens after the death of a loved one. However, when a family member or friend is struck by a chronic illness or a cognitive impairment, grief is felt even before a physical passing. This fact sheet explains the symptoms, stages, and types of grief.

FCA is now hosting a calendar of classes, workshops, and events compiled from each of the 11 CRCs and open to family caregivers across the country.

+Finding Home Care Help Through An App
Many family caregivers find it extremely challenging to provide all the needed care to a loved one. While hiring paid assistance is an option, the price of such a service is often out of reach for most families. Next Avenue’s Elizabeth Hewitt explores two apps (one from Finland), that try to provide paid caregiving help at a more reasonable price.

How to Get Teens Involved in Family Caregiving
Sandwich generation caregivers are those adults who are providing care to both an older loved one and are also raising a child. This can be a very taxing situation for the parent(s) or guardian(s) if they are the sole provider of care in the household. AARP’s Cassandra Brooklyn gives tips on how to encourage teenage children to help with the family caregiving tasks while being mindful of the teenager’s needs.
