Vol. 14, No. 6

June 2021

Dear Friends:

Family caregivers are crucial to the health and quality of life of millions of spouses, partners, parents, family members, relatives, and friends across the country. Summertime can add additional complications and concerns for family caregivers. Age, medical conditions, or medications can inhibit a person's ability to regulate body temperature, making them more vulnerable to heat related problems. For more information, FCA's article on Hot Weather Tips is a good starting point to understand summertime weather risks, and includes warning signs of heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke (the most serious) . For additional reading, please see the National Institute on Aging's article on Hot Weather Safety for Older Adults.

On a lighter note, we hope you will be able to carve out time for your own self-care this summer, and take part in the family events, cookouts, outdoor activities, and festivals that we all look forward to with the coming of summer.

Sincerely,

Calvin Hu

WHAT’S NEW AT FCA

FCA Supports LGBTQ+ Caregivers

FCA is a community-based nonprofit with deep roots in the Bay Area having been founded over 40 years ago in San Francisco. We celebrate and honor diversity and inclusion. We consider family to be an inclusive term and recognize that caregivers might be friends, partners, and community.

FCA joins the world in celebrating Pride Month, and we’re proud to advocate for and support LGBTQ+ caregivers everywhere. Through the development of LGBTQ+ related resources, support groups, training sessions, events and partnerships, we work to ensure we’re addressing the needs of these caregivers and support them.

If you’re an LGBTQ+ caregiver seeking resources, please see our fact sheets: Special Concerns of LGBTQ+ Caregivers and Legal Issues for LGBTQ+ Caregivers, We also offer an online support group called LGBTQ+ Community Support Caregiving for our Families and Friends. It’s a place for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender caregivers of adults with chronic health problems to discuss the unique issues of caring for their loved ones.

INFORMATION YOU CAN USE

Fighting For—Not With—Your Loved One’s Healthcare Professionals (webinar recording)

Family caregivers’ relationships with their loved ones’ healthcare professionals can be that of appreciative partners or coldly suspicious antagonists. But there are ways that family caregivers can build mutual trust with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professions for the sake of their loved ones and themselves. In this webinar, we discuss why professionals’ ideas about “patient-centered care” sometimes excludes family members, how caregivers can present themselves as effective collaborators, and ways to productively question professionals’ treatment plans.

Presented by Dr. Barry J. Jacobs, clinical psychologist, healthcare consultant, caregiving author, and columnist on family caregiving for AARP.org.

Changing Places: Should Your Parents Move in with You?

Making the decision to move a parent into your home is often neither simple nor clear-cut. Some situations and questions should be addressed before making this choice. FCA's tip sheet on this topic includes key considerations like relationships, adapting the home, money, and personal care.

Caregiver Resource Center Classes

The California Caregiver Resource Centers (CRC) serve families and caregivers of adults affected by chronic and debilitating health conditions (FCA is the San Francisco Bay Area CRC). FCA is now hosting a calendar of classes, workshops, and events compiled from each of the 11 CRCs and open to family caregivers across the country.
