Try FLiP 2019!
Know a high school student who may want to explore planning as a potential career? Through a series of speakers, interactive planning activities, and tours on foot, bus, streetcar, and boat, our Future Leaders in Planning, FLiP 2019, summer student leadership development program June 4 - 7 will provide:
- The chance to network with and learn from planning professionals in the planning and related government services fields in the public and private sectors
- Broad exposure to planning from multiple perspectives, including: comprehensive planning, economic development, environmental, historic preservation, community redevelopment, transportation, geographic information systems, safety, education and research, and more

Executive Director delivers Award to USF President Judy Genshaft
At our 36th Annual Planning & Design Awards in October, our Executive Director recognized USF System President Judy Genshaft for the tremendous impact she has made planning for growth and economic development on campus and throughout our community. Unfortunately, Dr. Genshaft could not receive her award in person that evening. On January 23, Melissa Zornitta was happy to meet with Dr. Genshaft at a meeting with her executive team to personally deliver the award.

Turning around
Dangerous by Design
With Florida topping the list as the nation's deadliest state for pedestrians in the new report Dangerous by Design, you may be wondering what work is being done here at home to turn these alarming statistics around. All four local governments, as well as FDOT, have a goal of zero traffic fatalities. Working together through the MPO, they have made safety a top priority for funding new projects.

Take the Tampa Bay
Regional Travel Survey!
The purpose of the
Tampa Bay Regional Travel Survey is to better understand the travel patterns and needs of residents like you. Your participation is very important.
The resulting data will help ensure that computer models of traffic flow are accurate so transportation investments can be based on sound analysis. The survey helps our region meet federal requirements and remain eligible for federal transportation funding.
You will be asked for details about when, how, and why you travel, and entered into a drawing to win a $250 Amazon gift card and other prizes after completing the survey.

Working towards safe and equitable transportation for all
In January, the Vision Zero Coalition and the MPO's Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) were busy creating awareness for walking, biking, and roadway safety.
BPAC assisted the Tampa Police Department with the Gasparilla Children's Parade Annual Bicycle & Pedestrian Safety Rodeo on January 19. A big thanks to St. Joseph's Hospital for handing out free helmets to the kids!
The MPO also teamed up with APA Florida Sun Coast Section, On Bikes, and Safe & Sound Hillsborough for a #VisionZERO813 Coalition street mural painting event on January 12. The art was inspired by Alex Tavares (seen jumping for joy in top right photo below) - as interpreted by artist Junior Polo - at Cleveland Elementary School.

And on January 21, the Hillsborough Vision Zero Coalition was joined by the USF Sistuhs and African Students Association to march in Tampa's Martin Luther King Day Parade. Many parade-goers gave the thumbs-up to the safe-streets messages carried by these young people! Keep an eye on the

Microplastics...
Should we be concerned?
Particularly after a heavy rain, trash finds its way into the Hillsborough River. Beginning around the 1950s, more and more of the trash being produced was in the form of plastic. These plastics resist break down and degradation and can persist in the environment indefinitely. While they can break apart into smaller and smaller pieces, they seem to never go away. Birds and fish, including those that are a source of food for humans, ingest these microplastics. These plastics are composed of chemicals suspected of having harmful health effects.
