Help us update Hillsborough's Long Range Transportation Plan

Hillsborough County will grow to more than two million people by 2045. No single transportation solution will solve our traffic woes as we continue to grow. We need more transportation choices and safe mobility for everyone. This is where you come in...

Our staff (and families) cleaned up pretty well on April 27!

On April 27th Plan Hillsborough staff, and family members, participated in the
Great American Cleanup  sponsored by  Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful . The team of volunteers spent their Saturday morning picking up trash along the trails, shoreline, and boat ramp at Riverhills Park in Temple Terrace. The cleanup is a call to action to create more sustainable communities by focusing on activities that impact individuals in need, provide aesthetic community improvements, and improve the environment.
Plan Hillsborough leaders selected by APA

Melissa Zornitta, Planning Commission Executive Director, has been appointed to serve on not one, not two, but three committees of the American Planning Association (APA) - the National Nominating Committee, the National Membership Committee, and the APA Foundation Fundraising Committee. Her tenure is through the end of 2019.

Melissa Dickens, Strategic Planning and Policy Manager, was recently selected to be the Director of Membership for APA's Women and Planning Division with approximately 2,600 members nationwide. She'll be responsible for managing membership data, advising on member benefits, and fostering membership engagement and recruitment.

37th Annual Planning _ Design Awards
Plan to join us

The Planning Commission is proud to announce our 37th annual celebration of excellence in planning and design in Hillsborough County. Winning projects contribute to a better quality of life and serve as models to learn from and emulate. With the emphasis on the importance of great planning in our own region, our awards program is held in October as one of the many national festivities held during the American Planning Association's National Community Planning Month and celebration of Great Places in America (with Tampa's own Riverwalk bringing home the 2018 APA People's Choice Award).

A big win for Vision Zero Hero Jackie Toledo and Florida safety!

The National Safety Council says cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year and that one out of every four crashes in the U.S. is caused by texting and driving. Thanks to State Representative Jackie Toledo, who introduced House Bill 107, many lives will now be saved throughout Florida!

Board of County Commissioners: Regular Meeting - 05.15.19
BOCC National Bike Month proclamation
National Bike Month celebrations

May is National Bike Month, sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists, and celebrated in communities from coast to coast. On May 15, the Hillsborough Board of County Commissioners recognized the benefits and importance of bicycle safety and the many local bicycling advocates with a proclamation. Watch the video, and you'll see many familiar faces, including our own Wade Reynolds and many who've long been involved with our Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) and Vision Zero Hillsborough Coalition - Pedal Power Promoters, Tampa Downtown Partnership, Westshore Tampa Alliance, ULI Tampa Bay, and many other community partners - working towards bike/pedestrian safety and support of healthy transportation choices.

On Thursday, May 23, join Tampa's new Mayor Jane Castor and the Tampa Downtown Partnership for Downtown's Bike to Work Ride & Rally. Group rides are being organized from eight neighborhood locations. All rides end at Lykes Gaslight Park for the rally with exhibitors, coffee, and healthy nibbles.
Wade's stolen bicycle story has a happy ending

MPO bike/ped coordinator and liaison to our Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC), Wade Reynolds, was surprised with a BMC Trailfox mountain bike at the May 8 BPAC meeting. Two months prior, while participating in Plan Hillsborough's Commuter Challenge Week, Wade's locked bike was stolen from the rack near County Center. As hope of a successful recovery began to diminish, Hillsborough MPO's Johnny Wong enlisted the help of the BPAC and Jon Dengler of  Well Built Bikes to replace the stolen bike with a refurbished model. After sourcing bike parts from garages and raising funds to build it, the good-as-new bike was presented. A flabbergasted Wade was very appreciative of the hard work and thoughtful people with whom he gets to work.

Tampa dam
Tampa dam flow regulated by new sluice gate

Maintaining a minimum flow of fresh water down the lower Hillsborough River has been critical to the recovery and maintenance of this important natural resource. How do you maintain flow when water in the reservoir isn't high enough to flow over the dam? Until recently, the solution was to use electric powered pumps to move water up and over the dam. This solution  wa s dependent on the reliability of the mechanical pumps . Costs included  the purchase  of pumps and the electricity to operate the pumps.
