An incredible group of students just  FLiPped  over  p lanning !

On June 4 - June 7, the Planning Commission held our fourth annual Future Leaders in Planning ( FLiP ) student leadership development program. Designed as an opportunity to introduce  Hillsborough County  high school students to urban planning as a potential career,  FLiP  2019 was a four-day, intensive program. A big hit with the students, mentors, and parents alike, FLiP offered a broad exposure to planning from both public and private sector perspectives across many fields. The students flourished while networking with professionals, collaborating in teams, and honing their presentation and public speaking skills.

The Planning Commission is proud to announce our 37th annual celebration of excellence in planning and design in Hillsborough County. Winning projects contribute to a better quality of life and serve as models to learn from and emulate. With the emphasis on the importance of great planning in our own region, our awards program is held in October as one of the many national festivities held during the American Planning Association's National Community Planning Month and celebration of Great Places in America (with Tampa's own Riverwalk bringing home the 2018 APA People's Choice Award).

Transportation Improvement Program annual update

At its June 11 meeting, the MPO held its annual Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) public hearing to receive feedback from the community and to approve a list of transportation projects to be funded in 2020-2024. Improvements to bus services, lighting safety, intersections, traffic signal systems, and I-4 Interchanges in the Seffner/Dover/Plant City area were accepted. Also approved was investment in system preservation and numerous walk/bike safety enhancements. One project was removed from the priority list, an extension of Big Bend Road from Boggy Creek to Balm Boyette Road, because of concerns about impact on the rural area.

Independent Oversight Committee set to meet on July 16

The Independent Oversight Committee (IOC) will have its long-awaited first meeting to discuss the transportation sales tax on July 16. The IOC was created to oversee spending of the one cent sales tax for transportation by approving plans and preparing an annual audit. The 13 members of the committee were appointed by governing bodies earlier in the year.

At the first meeting, the IOC will approve bylaws, elect officers, and establish procedures for reviewing transportation plans from Hillsborough County, HART, and the cities of Tampa, Temple Terrace, and Plant City. All IOC meetings will be held in the Planning Commission Boardroom on the 18th floor of County Center and will be aired on HTV. The public is always welcome.

River Board & TAC welcome back consistent, dedicated members

Much of the River Board's success is due to its tireless and dedicated volunteers. Since 1986, a string of devoted people have freely given their time to maintain, and improve, the Hillsborough River for all to enjoy. The Board is composed of three elected officials, one from the Tampa City Council, one from the Temple Terrace City Council, and one from the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners. We're happy to welcome back City Councilman Guido Maniscalco following his recent volunteering and appointment for another term on the River Board representing the City of Tampa. First appointed in November of 2016, Councilman Maniscalco will continue his focus on maintaining and improving the lower river in the City of Tampa.
