Staff Spotlight: Conservation
Conservation Director Deni Porej joined the organization in November after a multi-month international search. Deni has extensive experience working in Island ecosystems. As conservation director for the World Wildlife Fund’s Mediterranean program, he supervised and supported forest and protected areas teams working in 12 Mediterranean countries. He also served as CEO of World Wildlife Fund Adria. Deni began working remotely due to COVID and has since joined us on the Island, diving right into projects including breeding bird surveys. The Conservation team has also filled roles on our Native and Invasive Plant teams, welcomed a new group of ACE interns and a wildlife intern, and is currently hiring for an additional wildlife biologist. Catalina California Naturalists Learn
The popular Catalina California Naturalist Program is underway, with a new group of naturalists currently working their way through the course. The program, in partnership with the University of California-Agriculture and Natural Resources-Cooperative Extension Naturalist Training Program, breaks down and delves deeper into the topics covered in Naturalist 1 & 2 Trainings, while grounding Catalina natural history inside a 40-hour, 4-unit community college level course. Over the last three years, the Conservancy has certified 42 California Naturalists. This year’s course going completely virtual has enabled the Conservancy to expand its reach with 36 current students. We look forward to learning more about their hard work. Good luck to our naturalists! Learn more about the naturalist programs.
