CGS Releases the

Sierra Nevada Atlas

The California Geological Survey just released the Sierra Nevada Earth Science Atlas, the most detailed geologic framework mapping of California’s most iconic landscape to date. The complete Atlas is being rolled out in phases, with the initial geologic map available on our website.

Progress Continues with Project Plug

CalGEM's Project Plug work continues! As of April 2026, CalGEM has sealed 333 orphaned oil wells through the program, totaling 1,235,306 feet underground plugged thus far, with more work already underway. Five Years Later: Visiting McKinney Ranch

In 2021, McKinney Ranch in Madera County received a conservation easement grant through the SALC program. Five years later, see how those funds have helped protect this cattle rangeland and habitats for species ranging from burrowing owls to bald eagles. Check it out

Conserving Land with the California Rangeland Trust

Conservation and the Strategic Growth Council’s SALC grant program recently closed two conservation easements with our partners at the California Rangeland Trust. These new easements for Dry Creek Ranch in Merced County and Ray-Mar Ranch in Calaveras County help to protect an additional 8,700 acres of rangeland in California. 

CalGEM Joins Student Career Fair

In February, staff from CalGEM’s Central District participated in a career fair for nearly 700 students at Fletcher Elementary School in Bakersfield. Staff had a great time sharing more about their work, interacting with students, and providing props (and candy)! Learn more about CalGEM careers here.
