Advisory: MBCC Hotel Construction, Crane Removal Requires 4-day Closure of 17 Street

Temporary Closure of 17 Street Scheduled for October 7-10, 2026

What's Happening

The Miami Beach Convention Center (MBCC) Hotel construction is well underway. Next week, scheduled from Wednesday, October 7 through Saturday, October 10, 2026 specialized construction crews will be dismantling and removing a large crane that is currently onsite.

In order to complete the operation safely and efficiently, 17 Street will be closed for approximately four days between Washington Avenue and Convention Center Drive. Technical equipment will be onsite within the work zone adjacent to the MBCC Hotel, signage for detours will be in place and police officers will assist with traffic guidance around this operation.

The temporary closure will be in place around-the-clock while this operation takes place. Pedestrians will be able to traverse the area after 6 p.m. on each day of the closure.

Timeline

The crane removal operation is scheduled to start with set up on Wednesday, October 7. Heavy lifting activities are scheduled for Thursday and Friday, followed by clean up and break down on Saturday, October 10. If there is strong wind or rain during this timeframe, the operation may extend into Sunday, October 11.

Please note, this schedule could change due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances. If this is the case beyond Sunday, an additional notice will be sent to the community with updated information.

What to Expect

  • Moderate levels of construction noise during the day.
  • Construction equipment, machinery and workers on the job site.
  • A construction MOT (maintenance of traffic) plan will be set up around the work zone. Detours for vehicles and pedestrians will be in place.
  • As a safety precaution, parking on the roof on the New World Symphony (NWS) garage will be restricted while crane operations are in progress. Please use North Lincoln Lane to Pennsylvania Avenue to access the NWS Garage.
  • NWS fellows and staff are asked to access the NWS from Lincoln Lane North or Washington Avenue while crane operations are happening.
  • For access to the 17 Street Garage, use southbound Convention Center Drive or eastbound 17 Street from Alton Road.
  • Internal city departments are in coordination to minimize impacts to the public as much possible while the crane operation is taking place.
