Project Milestone

Lane Channel Construction Complete!

Construction of the 3,139-foot-long Lane Channel was completed last month after being demolished in Spring 2023. Crews will continue with fence work and perform cleanup efforts along the channel.

This milestone required tremendous effort from construction crews and included activities such as installing and removing temporary shoring beams, excavation, backfilling, and concrete pours. Previously a V-shape channel, the new U-shape configuration was designed to withstand a 100-year storm while increasing stormwater capacity.

Fun fact: Seventy-six tons of concrete and 703 tons of steel were used to reconstruct this structure along southbound SR-55.

About the Project

OCTA, in cooperation with Caltrans, is improving 4 miles of SR-55 between I-405 and I-5. The project will improve traffic flow and reduce travel time by adding one regular lane and one carpool lane in each direction. Also, the project will add merge lanes between several interchanges and stripe carpool lanes for continuous access, augmenting safety on the freeway by making merging easier. These enhancements are expected to create a better, smoother driving experience for motorists.
