November 2023

Message from the President
Wow! It is hard to believe we are already in the fourth quarter of 2023. The trials and tribulations of the past couple of years appear to have left a permanent impact on our way of life. Seems like only a fleeting time ago the term “zoom” meant to travel in a vehicle or an adjustment on a camera. Now “Zoom” appears to be the new normal for many of us as we transitioned into the virtual world by working remotely. It is almost as if the Matrix may have actually materialized before our eyes. While our world appears to be currently in a perpetual state of changing paradigms, adapting to these types of changes is a staple of our profession. I am confident we will all persevere and become more resilient because of this experience.

Needless to say, our annual conference is no exception to this adaptability process. After a few years of uncertainty, disruption, and virtual attendance, the original in-person format is once again the mainstay of our annual conference. Currently, our CEM Division Conference Committee is hard at work planning and organizing conference events to ensure this year’s conference is as engaging as possible. Since the 2024 Annual Conference & Expo will meet in Montreal, Canada, please do not forget to update your passport and travel documents in plenty of time to travel to Montreal next May. Lastly, the abstract submission deadline is quickly approaching. You must submit your abstract by 17 November 2023, which is less than two weeks away. I anticipate some engaging presentations from both academia and industry.

A little about me: I have served on the Construction Engineering & Management Division Board of Directors for several years, and I am extremely humbled that the Division’s membership has the confidence to entrust me with the responsibility to serve as the CEM Division President. I would like to thank our outgoing president, Kris Harbin, for his dedication and service to the Division, and I will strive to continue his good work as we move forward and wish him well with his future endeavors. I look forward to working with the CEM Division Board of Directors (Russ Milam, Mary Margaret Mitchell, William Leonard, Emily Wall, JuHyeong Ryu, James Warren, Robert Ranallo, and Setareh Torabzadeh) in striving toward meeting and exceeding the value expectations of a membership in CEM Division.

Until next time, stay safe.

Henry Lester, Ph.D.
President, Construction and Engineering Management Division
2023 Annual Best Student Paper Winner
The CEM Division held its 2023 Best Student Paper Competition, and the winning student was Min Bahadur Pun Kayat from Louisiana State University! He presented “Quality Control for Net Zero Energy Modular (NZEM) Homes: Challenges and Prospects” at the Division’s Town Hall during the 2023 Annual Conference and Expo. The presentation involved a fascinating application area of construction engineering and management.
