Project Spotlight: Shannon’s Partnerships at Two of Pittsburgh's Historic Landmarks

This month, we’re celebrating Pittsburgh’s rich architectural history and highlighting our work inside two of the city’s most recognizable landmarks: the US Steel Tower and the Union Trust Building. For decades, Shannon Construction has been trusted to deliver high-quality interior build-outs and tenant improvements that breathe new life into these historic spaces — ensuring they remain vibrant and functional for today’s businesses.

Built in 1917 by renowned architect Frederick J. Osterling, the Union Trust Building is a stunning example of Flemish Gothic design. Over the years, Shannon has been trusted with a variety of interior build-outs for premier office tenants such as:

Shannon also performed a two floor custom restaurant build-out for Freshii, a healthy fast food chain as well as a first-class eat in/take out space for The Speckled Egg, complete with new kitchen.

Our work respects the building’s historic charm while delivering modern, efficient spaces tailored to each client’s needs.

US Steel Tower

Completed in 1971 — the same year Shannon Construction was founded — the US Steel Tower has been a cornerstone of our interior construction work for over 30 years. Over the decades, we’ve delivered projects that enhance the building’s functionality and tenant experience, including:

  • Renovating the International Corporate Suite
  • Adding a new conference area on the 61st floor
  • Designing and installing a custom sliding metal wall inspired by US Steel products, crafted by Ken Schultz
  • Re-stacking corporate offices and upgrading spaces like the Learning Center on the 16th floor

Today, our team continues this tradition with current projects such as:

  • New spec suites on the 27th and 32nd floors
  • A full interior build-out of the 50th floor for Meyer, Unkovic & Scott, with 72 offices and 26 workstations
  • Accessibility upgrades to the 51st floor corridor
  • Expanding Steelfit to include a state-of-the-art pickleball court — a unique tenant amenity
  • Four new projects on the horizon with USS/Nippon
