Construction Quarterly Newsletter

Summer 2023

Welcome to the summer issue of Construction Quarterly! As the summer heats up, work continues across campus on new and existing projects.

In this issue you will get a preview of new projects starting on campus this summer, updates on completed construction, ways to stay informed about changes, and how to get around campus. We also feature some of our sustainability efforts.

This season of historic growth on campus is integral to executing the strategic priorities of the University. The recently completed New College West and Yeh College were designed to foster interactions among students. These new residential colleges along with the ongoing work at Hobson College further support the effort to expand and support the Princeton student body.

Work continues at the Class of 1986 Fitness and Wellness Center and University Health Services while we celebrate the completion of the Soccer Practice Field – all spaces to encourage physical and mental well-being.

Each of these projects is a part of a busy summer projects season. So, while the campus dynamic has shifted to summer academic and athletic programs, it continues to bustle with activity as Princeton Builds.

HISTORIC GROWTH ON CAMPUS

NEW PROJECTS

PROSPECT HOUSE

The project vision and design goal for the Prospect House renovation is to make the historic building more functional, inviting, and inclusive. The renovations began this summer and will continue into Summer 2024. Improvements to the building include replacing foundation waterproofing, exterior façade repairs and renovation of interior and exterior areas of the building to maximize the physical accessibility and remove barriers. During the renovation, Prospect House will be closed.

THEATRE DRIVE GARAGE

Theater Drive Garage, formerly known as West Garage, is undergoing major maintenance this summer. The garage will be closed for repairs from Wednesday, June 14 until mid-August, with a phased reopening starting in mid-July.

Free pastries and coffee will be available at Stadium Garage between 8 and 10 am on Wednesdays during the closure.

Check live parking availability on the Parking and Transportation website.

POE FIELD

Installation began on an underground stormwater detention system in Poe Field required to support the current University Health Services project and for the upcoming Schmidt Hall project (anticipated start of Summer 2025). Stormwater management is a key elements of the Sustainability Action Plan.

While the system is being installed, approximately 400 geo-exchange bores will also be drilled on Poe Field to support the Steam to Hot Water Conversion Project which is a critical component of becoming carbon neutral by 2046. At the end of the project, Poe Field will be restored to its original state for campus and community use.

ELM DRIVE

For most of the summer, Elm Drive will be closed during second shift work hours (3:30 pm – 12:30 am) to install utilities within the road that will support the Hobson, Class of 1986 Fitness and Wellness and Steam to Hot Water Conversion Projects.

Elm Drive will be open during the day for vehicular use. There will be pedestrian detours along the west and east sides of Elm Drive and south of Dillon Court as the work along Elm Drive progresses. Please use caution in the area and note the pedestrian detours in place.

HAAGA HOUSE

Construction of Haaga House, a new facility which will serve as the home for the Women’s and Men’s Rugby squads, began earlier this spring on the Meadows Neighborhood site. The site provides new facilities, including showers and lockers, for the Women’s and Men’s teams, an athletic trainer’s room and gender-neutral public restrooms. A large overhanging roof provides cover for spectators at ground level, while a roof level platform provides a vantage point for coaches to observe games and practices.

COMPLETED PROJECTS

EQUAD J-WING FOURTH FLOOR RENOVATION

Construction is complete on the Equad J-Wing fourth floor renovation. This project creates separate and distinct laboratories for each faculty member, accommodates space needs and enables individual labs to utilize tools and equipment necessary to complete their research.

The renovation was managed by the University's Office of Capital Projects Science Portfolio team under the management of Jessica Johnson. The updated space was carried out for the Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering departments to accommodate expanded research and space needs.

SOCCER PRACTICE FIELD

Construction of the Soccer Practice Field was completed before reunions and commencement. This summer, the field is being enjoyed by various athletic camps and will then be utilized by Varsity teams as they return to campus for fall pre-season.

YEAR-END EVENTS

Another season of year-end events has closed. Thanks to the hard work of numerous groups across the University community, Princeton welcomed 25,000 alumni and visitors to campus to celebrate Reunions, Commencement and other events.

150,000

Pounds of Lumber

Staff built and set up stages, platforms, accessibility ramps, and bars for the various Reunions sites.

22

Built In Tent Tie Down

Tie downs were incorporated into the design of Yeh College and New College West to accommodate set up for Reunions and other events.

2

SUSTAINABILITY

at the heart of it all

SCRAPPY'S NEW HOME

The Sustainable Composting Research at Princeton (S.C.R.A.P.) Lab restarted its composting operations in Fall of 2022 after relocating from campus to a facility in West Windsor Township during the pandemic. To celebrate the move and re-opening, the S.C.R.A.P. Lab hosted a ribbon cutting this spring.

The Lab is a demonstration project to investigate the use of small-scale composting technology to advance campus sustainability goals around wasted food recycling and soil revitalization, while engaging the campus community and supporting Princeton’s core research & teaching mission.

GREENING MOVE-OUT

The Greening Move-Out program lead by the Office of Sustainability helped divert over 20 tons of stuff from the landfill as students left the dorms for the summer. The furniture, refrigerators, clothing, school supplies and other soft and household goods were collected and sorted thanks to student workers and staff volunteers.

The effort filled two stories of a warehouse with 55 couches, 40 fridges and many other items that will be resold to students in need at deeply reduced prices this fall. Read more about Greening Move-Out 2023.

COMING SOON: LIVE CAMPUS DIRECTIONS THROUGH NEW APP

A new app will launch this fall to help people better navigate campus. As a part of the campus wayfinding project launched last year, the new app will provide a detailed map with the ability to get live, turn by turn directions to points on campus. Users can select their routes for walking or biking or to avoid stairs or steep slopes. Eventually the app will integrate with Tiger Transit to include live bus locations and detours.

Be sure to check the fall issue of Construction Quarterly for a link to download the app!
