AFRICAN AMERICANS IN TRANSPORTATION HISTORY

Garret Augustus Morgan

Garret Augusts Morgan created the traffic signal. He did so after witnessing a death in an accident between a horse-drawn trolley and a car. The invention, which is credited with making streets safer, was patented in 1923.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
OCTA and Caltrans are working together to improve freeway capacity and operations on a 6.5-mile stretch of I-5 from SR-73 to El Toro Road in south Orange County. This voter-approved $580-million project will add a general purpose lane in each direction of the I-5 between Avery Parkway to Alicia Parkway, extend the second carpool lane from Alicia Parkway to El Toro Road in both directions, reconstruct two interchanges and one bridge, and modify on- and off-ramps. To further improve operations, carpool lanes in the project area will convert to continuous access. The project is expected to be completed in 2025.
