I-5 BEHIND THE SCENES
Ever wonder what it takes to improve a freeway? Here is a behind-the-scenes look at one of the I-5 South County Improvement Project meetings. This meeting includes staff from Caltrans, OCTA, safety, the general contractor, and construction crews. It takes a lot of coordination to make sure everything runs as smoothly and efficiently as possible.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
OCTA and Caltrans are working together to improve freeway capacity and operations on a 6.5-mile stretch of I-5 from SR-73 to El Toro Road in south Orange County. This voter-approved $580-million project will add a general purpose lane in each direction of the I-5 between Avery Parkway to Alicia Parkway, extend the second carpool lane from Alicia Parkway to El Toro Road in both directions, reconstruct two interchanges and one bridge, and modify on- and off-ramps. To further improve operations, carpool lanes in the project area will convert to continuous access. The project is expected to be completed in 2025.
