Hello Linda,

Thank you for opting in to recieve regular email updates on the Greater Cambridge Energy Project (GCEP). Please see below for the latest updates on construction activity in your area.

Construction Update

May 12 - May 24

City of Cambridge

Approved construction hours in Cambridge

  • Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Occasional activities may be performed beyond these hours or on weekends based on approval from local officials.

Ongoing activities

  • Broadway: Crews are installing transmission line conduit within the new substation site, off the roadway at 121 Broadway.

  • Third Street: Crews have implemented a traffic shift on Third Street between Linskey Way and Potter Street. Two lanes of travel will be maintained, and on-street metered parking is restricted to allow for test pit activities and duct bank installation on the east side of the roadway. The traffic shift will remain in place for the summer.
  • Excavation activities are ongoing off roadway at the corner of Third Street and Broadway (Volpe parcel) to support the installation of two underground vaults.

  • Linskey Way: Both underground vaults (manholes) have been installed on Linskey Way.
  • Excavation activities are ongoing including preparation for trench digging on Linskey Way between Third Street and Second Street. Trench digging will begin within several weeks.
  • Temporary sidewalk barriers north of the roadway will be maintained to safely secure the work zone in this area.
  • Ames Street: Crews are conducting enabling and preparation activities between Main Street and Memorial Drive to support upcoming vault and duct bank installations this summer.
  • Temporary modifications to the west side of Ames Street including changes to ramps, curbing, and overhead lighting.
  • Excavation to install sleeves to support and protect existing underground utilities.
  • There are no work activities planned on Ames Street between May 16 and May 21.
  • Galileo Galilei Way: Crews are excavating to install two underground vaults (manholes) between Main Street and Broadway, near Ames Place.

Anticipated activities

  • Second Street: Excavation activities including trench digging on Second Street between Athenaeum Street and Linskey Way.

Traffic Configurations

  • Construction activities will generally be done utilizing lane restrictions or alternating lane traffic patterns. If detours are necessary, clear signage will be posted to direct motorists and cyclists. Please continue to check the project website for updates and postings of traffic plans.
  1. Linkey Way will be one-way, allowing traffic from Third Street towards Second Street (west to east). Eastbound motorists will be detoured from Second Street, to Binney Street, to Third Street, to reconnect with Linskey Way. This traffic pattern will continue regularly during daytime work hours throughout the summer months.
  2. Ames Street southbound traffic will be detoured at Main Street, to Wadsworth Street. This traffic pattern will continue during daytime work hours through May 15.
  3. A permanent work zone including a northbound lane restriction will be in place on Galileo Galilei Way between Main Street and Broadway.

Popping Up in Your Neighborhood

With construction underway, our Project Engagement team continues to host “pop-up” events in neighborhoods surrounding planned construction activities. These events are scheduled at different times of day to maximize foot traffic and to meet community members during their everyday happenings.

Recently we hosted three events on MIT's campus. Students, faculty, and visitors engaged with our team to learn more about upcoming work and ask great questions. We enjoyed meeting some new people and look forward to keeping you informed.

If you’d like for our team to “pop-up” in your neighborhood, please reach out.
