GCEP Project Update

Electric Distribution Work to Kick-off on GCEP


As part of the overall scope of GCEP, Eversource is working on several electric distribution resiliency upgrades to improve electric reliability and integrate the distribution lines into the future underground substation being constructed between Broadway and Binney Street.


Starting on Monday October 6th, work crews will begin enabling activities on Binney Street between Third Street and Fifth Street. The enabling work, followed by underground distribution vault duct bank installation, will continue for several months progressing towards Galileo Galilei Way. There will be no interruptions to your electric service as part of this work.


What you can expect:



  • Curb removal and field tests (test pits) within the roadway median on Binney Street
  • Lane restrictions on Binney Street to support safe construction activities
  • Installation of underground vaults and duct banks
  • General work hours Monday – Friday 7am – 4pm.

Construction Update

Approved construction hours in Cambridge


  • Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Occasional activities may be performed beyond these hours or on weekends based on approval from local officials.
  • Currently, work is ocurring on Saturdays at 121 Broadway between 7 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. and on Third Street between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
  • Daytime work on Memorial Drive is permitted Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
  • There will ne no work on Monday, October 13, in observance of Indigenous People's Day.


Ongoing activities


  • Broadway:
  • Crews are installing transmission line conduit within and beyond the new substation site at 121 Broadway, off the roadway. This activity is occurring off the roadway progressing towards Third Street, Monday through Saturday.
  • Third Street:
  • Excavation activities continue near Kendall Street progressing toward Linskey Way. Crews will follow behind to install duck bank, backfill and temporarily restore the roadway through mid-October. This activity is occurring Monday through Saturday.


  • Linskey Way:
  • One crew is working on temporary restoration between East Kendall Street and Second Street.


  • Second Street: 
  • Starting soon, trench excavation will progress from Linskey Way onto Second Street. The work on Second Street will continue throughout the fall and w.
  • Ames Street: 
  • One crew is excavating to install duct bank between Amherst Street and Memorial Drive for the B2A Project route.
  • Cyclist and pedestrian traffic has shifted from the east side of the road to the west side of the road between Memorial Drive and Amherst Street.
  • Another crew is excavating to install underground duct bank between heading north toward Main Street for the P13 Project route.
  • Starting soon, pedestrian traffic will shift from the east side of the road to the west side of the road between Amherst Street and Main Street.
  • These activities have necessitated a 24/7 road closure on Ames Street between Memorial Drive and Amherst Street. Motorists should continue to follow posted signage.
  • Memorial Drive:
  • Crews have ongoing field tests (test pits) at several locations on Memorial Drive between Vassar Street and Ames Street. Temporary lane restrictions will be necessary.
  • Starting as early as October 20, crews will begin vault and duct bank installation along Memorial Drive, pending final approvals. The work will occur Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Traffic Configurations


  • Construction activities will generally be done utilizing lane restrictions or alternating lane traffic patterns. If detours are necessary, clear signage will be posted to direct motorists and cyclists. Please continue to check the project website for updates and postings of traffic plans.
  • During daytime construction activities, Linskey Way may be closed at Third Street. During these times, all vehicles will enter and exit Linskey Way via Binney Street and Second Street. Alternating traffic patterns may be necessary on Linskey Way. This traffic pattern is needed while crews transition from Linskey onto Third Street.
  • Ames Street remains closed 24/7 between Memorial Drive and Amherst Street. During daytime hours, southbound traffic on Ames Street continues to be detoured at Main Street, to Wadsworth Street and northbound traffic on Ames Street will remain open between Amherst Street and Main Street.

City of Somerville / City of Boston


There is no construction planned in Somerville or Boston at this time.
