Honorary Consul's Monthly Message

Welcome to the April Newsletter!

“Spring will come and so will happiness. Hold on. Life will get warmer.” Anita Krizzan.

It’s a balmy 78 degrees as I write this newsletter, with new flowers popping up on every block. When was the last time you took a drive down the scenic highways in Belize at this time of the year? It’s a real treat to see the majestic display of blooming trees as one drives down the winding Hummingbird highway in citrus land, the Western Highway to the sprawling hills of Benque or the Northern Highway to sugar country.

Amongst the lush greenery that abounds, Bukut trees with their soft peach petals, the Shower of Gold, Pink Cassias, May Flower and the Flamboyant trees, peep out - showcasing waves of billowing colors in the blue skies. Roll down the car windows and breathe in the fresh air distinct to the Jewel, stimulating all our senses. In Florida we are enjoying the vibrant Poinciana and Jacaranda trees and the flower shops filled with exotic vibrant flowers. And to nourish our bodies, Mother Nature takes care of us with an abundance of mangoes, cashews, avocados, guava, star apple, kinep, plum and so much more.

Spring is in the air, and we hope there is a spring in your step!

How was your Easter? We hope that you had a very happy and safe Easter and that you’ve come back to work and everyday life feeling renewed and energized to face the music.

If you managed to do some fishing over Easter and saved some of your catch for later, let’s eat fish! Fried fish with creole sauce from “Hot Mamas” will surely hit the spot. And as an appetizer, or “boca” as Belizeans say, conch ceviche with corn chips is always a good way to start. On Easter Sunday, conch ceviche and Belizean cheese dip are how I like to celebrate. Don’t miss our Recipe of the Month and Street Food Series for the full recipes!

New heroes are born every day and Belize gained a new hero, Captain Howell Grange who quietly but bravely and skillfully navigated his hijacked plane over two hours flying without incident for its innocent passengers, finally safely landing the Cessna Caravan plane full of passengers. We congratulate Captain Grange for his bravery and thank him for his dedication in keeping us safe in the Belizean skies.

We also take a moment to reflect on the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, a spiritual leader whose compassion touched hearts across the world. Through his example of kindness, humility and service, he brought many closer to their faith. In his own words, “Rivers do not drink their own water; trees do not eat their own fruit... Life is good when you are happy; but much better when others are happy because of you.” May his legacy inspire us to lead with kindness, service, and faith.

Just like the blooms along the highways in Belize, progress has been blossoming across the country this month.

Prime Minister Briceño announced a well-earned salary increase for public sector nurses—recognizing their vital role in our healthcare system. P.M. Briceño also received a call from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio this week when they discussed trade, investment, and regional issues like the crisis in Haiti and the Belize-Guatemala ICJ case. From unity-focused remarks at the 10th Jalsa Salana Belize to leading a southern border security visit with key ministers, the PM stayed active on all fronts.

We’ve also included an updated list of National Assembly members, reflecting recent changes in Government of Belize appointments.

First Lady H.E. Rossana Briceño led meaningful sessions on gender equality and honored community changemakers on Good Deeds Day—reminding us that every act of kindness counts.

You’ll also find an informative and inspirational message from Ambassador H.E. Lynn Young in this issue.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs secured a BZ $90,000 grant to empower Belizean women and continued regional advocacy, especially around U.S. tariffs. The Hon. Francis Fonseca, Hon. Kareem Musa, and Hon. Oscar Mira toured the western and southern borders, witnessing firsthand the devastation caused by illegal activities like logging and drug trafficking from Guatemala. Belize’s global partnerships were also strengthened during the successful co-chairing of the International Council meeting by CEO Amalia Mai and Carlos Pol while also engaging in crucial CARICOM dialogue on US tariff policies.

Under GOB Movers and Shakers, read how the ministries at home stayed busy with reforms, climate talks, and firearm regulation improvements. And out in the fields, nearly 90 livestock farmers learned drought-resilient techniques, thanks to a collaboration with Mexico’s Nohol Agrosciences.

After a month filled with meaningful progress across Belize, it's only fitting to spotlight individuals who embody that same spirit of service and heart in their everyday lives.

This month’s Star of the Month, Mrs. Marie Therese Leslie Vernon, shines for her heartfelt service—lifting others through style, compassion, and community support. Make sure you don’t miss it! Belizeans do great things wherever they go!

And speaking of inspiration—The big reveal is here! Belize’s most beautiful and talented girls are once again vying for the Miss Belize Universe, and you can view these stunning candidates in this newsletter. We congratulate them for their courage and wish them all the very best! #Belizeansarebeautiful

National Symbols of Belize

Dear Fellow Belizeans,

Warm greetings to each and every member of our vibrant Belizean community across the United States.

As we conclude the month of April, I take this opportunity to reach out and share important updates regarding recent policy changes in the United States that affect Belize and the Belizean Diaspora, even as our government recommits after the recent elections in Belize. Please be assured of the commitment of the Embassy of Belize in Washington, D.C. and our Consulates in Miami, L.A., Chicago and New York to continue to serve and support you during these times of profound changes.

The current U.S. Administration has introduced several policies in the first few months of its term that are directly relevant to our community:

· Immigration: The Administration has intensified efforts to reduce illegal and irregular immigration into the United States, including reforming asylum processes, locating and deporting undocumented immigrants, and encouraging illegal immigrants to “self-deport”. As a result, we have experienced an increase in requests from Belizeans with expired or lost documentation seeking to return home.

As you may have heard from our Prime Minister, Belizeans are always welcome to return home, and we at the Embassy and at the consulates have taken steps to expedite preparation of travel documents. However, you should be aware that some airports will not allow passengers to board without a valid identification. In those cases, the Department of Homeland Security advises that non-U.S. nationals looking to return home can download their “CBP Home” App which can be used to verify a person in lieu of valid identification.

However, as many of the initiatives are still in flux, we advise all Belizeans to remain cautious. If you or your loved ones are involved in immigration processes, we strongly urge you to seek advice from reputable immigration attorneys or accredited representatives. Please beware of misinformation and scams. We continue to have regular meetings with the Department of Homeland Security to address the issues, and the Embassy and its Consulates in the U.S. will continue to provide you with information as we receive updates.

Trade and Tariffs:

The Administration has signaled a recalibration of U.S. trade policy, including the implementation of a broad-based 10% tariff on all goods entering the United States. While none of the initiatives are specifically aimed at Belize, several of the mainstays of our economy in sectors like agriculture, seafood, and cultural exports will be affected. In addition, any inflation brought on by the implementation of the new tariffs will affect the cost of imports since Belize imports most of its goods and services from the United States.

We are actively engaging with U.S. agencies to advocate for trade policies and possible exemptions that protect and expand opportunities for Belizean commerce, many of which are linked to Belizean American businesses here in the United States.

More generally, you will have heard that the new administration is reviewing many of the international aid programs, and this may affect several projects in Belize that were being financed with assistance from the United States. One program in particular was the project initiated by the Millenium Challenge Corporation. Our government continues discussions with U.S. agencies to get clarification and where possible, exempt the projects that are important to our development and the mutual objectives of both countries.

Now more than ever, it is important that we stay informed, united, and engaged. I encourage all Belizeans in the United States to register with the Embassy and Consulates so we can keep you updated on important developments. Together, we can ensure that the voice of the Belizean community remains strong and that we navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead with resilience and hope.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to us. We are here for you.

Furthermore, as we reflect on the contributions of women leaders this April, we also prepare to bid a fond farewell to our departing Deputy Chief of Mission, Ms. Cinnamon Bottaro. Ms. Bottaro has been an invaluable member of our diplomatic team here in Washington, D.C., serving Belize with exceptional leadership, diplomatic skill, and unwavering commitment.

Throughout her tenure, Ms. Bottaro has expertly represented Belize, significantly advancing our nation's interests in both bilateral relations with the United States and within multilateral forums like the Organization of American States (OAS). Beyond these diplomatic achievements, DCM Bottaro has been a driving force behind enhancing coordination between the Embassy, our Consulates across the U.S., and the Immigration Department in Belize, which has directly benefited Belizeans abroad.

Ms. Bottaro's dedication, professionalism, and strategic vision have made her an exceptional asset. As she moves on to her next endeavor, we extend our deepest gratitude for her outstanding service to Belize and wish her every success in the future.

--

On behalf of the Government of Belize and our entire team here in Washington, D.C., I thank you for the contributions you make every day — not only to the United States but also to our beloved Belize.

With warm regards and best wishes for a successful and hopeful month of May.

Pope Francis lived a life defined by humility, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the marginalized. From his modest beginnings in Buenos Aires to becoming the first pope from the Americas, he has broken barriers with a simple lifestyle and a powerful message of inclusivity. Widely known as the people’s pope, his influence has transcended religious, political, and cultural boundaries, uniting people through a shared call to mercy, humility, and global outreach. Through both his words and actions, he has reminded the world that true leadership is grounded in service, and that faith must always be led by love. His legacy will endure as a testament to moral courage and deep humanity. May he rest in peace. Read the final reflections of Pope Francis below.

“In Definition of "Hospital" by Pope Francis

"The walls of hospitals have heard more honest prayers than churches...

They have witnessed far more sincere kisses than those in airports...

It is in hospitals that you see a homophobe being saved by a gay doctor.

A privileged doctor saving the life of a beggar...

In intensive care, you see a Jew taking care of a racist...

A police officer and a prisoner in the same room receiving the same care...

A wealthy patient waiting for a liver transplant, ready to receive the organ from a poor donor...

It is in these moments, when the hospital touches the wounds of people, that different worlds intersect according to a divine design. And in this communion of destinies, we realize that alone, we are nothing.

The absolute truth of people, most of the time, only reveals itself in moments of pain or in the real threat of an irreversible loss.

A hospital is a place where human beings remove their masks and show themselves as they truly are, in their purest essence.

This life will pass quickly, so do not waste it fighting with people.

Do not criticize your body too much.

Do not complain excessively.

Do not lose sleep over bills.

Make sure to hug your loved ones.

Do not worry too much about keeping the house spotless.

Material goods must be earned by each person—do not dedicate yourself to accumulating an inheritance.

. . .

You are waiting for too much: Christmas, Friday, next year, when you have money, when love arrives, when everything is perfect...

Listen, perfection does not exist.

A human being cannot attain it because we are simply not made to be fulfilled here.

Here, we are given an opportunity to learn.

So, make the most of this trial of life—and do it now.

Respect yourself, respect others. Walk your own path, and let go of the path others have chosen for you.

Respect: do not comment, do not judge, do not interfere.

Love more, forgive more, embrace more, live more intensely!

And leave the rest in the hands of the Creator."

—Pope Francis 🙏

Marie Therese Leslie Vernon, wife of Mark Vernon and mother of Michelle Thompson, was born in Belize City, Belize. She is the sixth of eleven children born to Homer Leslie, Sr. and Louise Balderamos Leslie.

Growing up, Marie attended Salvation Army School, where her faith in God became deeply rooted. She later enrolled at Belize Junior Secondary School #2, followed by Belize Technical College, where she earned a diploma in secretarial studies.

One of the most challenging moments in Marie’s life was her move to the United States in 1983. The transition from Belize to Texas required many lifestyle and cultural adjustments. Additionally, her first few months were marked by loneliness due to the distance from her family and the lack of modern communication tools. However, with prayer and determination, Marie quickly built connections in her new community and began exploring various career paths.

Over the years, Marie’s professional journey led her to the fashion and retail industry. She spent 10 years working at Neiman Marcus and is currently a style advisor at Saks Fifth Avenue. For the past 20 years, she has been helping women of all ages build their confidence through fashion guidance and personal styling.

In 2019, Marie discovered a passion for humanitarian work and community service. That summer, she was invited to lead a fundraiser for an 11-year-old shooting victim in Belize. The success of the event inspired her to continue supporting Belizeans in need through regular fundraising initiatives. These efforts have helped cover medical expenses, provide meals, pay tuition fees, and assist with funeral costs. Marie sees this work as an opportunity to give back and unite fellow Belizeans around meaningful causes. Her compassion, trustworthiness, and dedication have earned her widespread support and respect in both Belize and the United States.

Looking ahead, Marie hopes to establish a nonprofit organization focused on education and housing. Ensuring every child receives a proper education and every family has a place to call “home” are causes close to her heart.

Marie’s greatest piece of advice is to pray for and uplift others. As she puts it, “You never know what someone is going through. Speaking positivity into another person’s life can make a difference that lasts a lifetime.
