Welcome to the August Newsletter!

As August draws to a close, we take a moment to reflect on a month filled with meaning and reflection. We began by commemorating Emancipation Day, honoring the strength and resistance of those who endured and fought against the injustices of slavery. Their courage laid the foundation for the freedoms we now cherish, serving as a solemn reminder of our shared history and enduring resilience.

And it was also back to school days which carried the cheerful sound of school bells and children’s laughter echoing through playgrounds. Classrooms came alive once more with eager minds—curious and ready to learn, grow, and dream.

With Labor Day coming up on September 1^st let us honor the contribution of those workers in the US who toil every day to bring us services and products which make our lives easier. So, in the long Labor Day weekend ahead, we’re gifted a welcome respite to reconnect and recharge. As August gives way to September, the spirit of celebration begins to stir in the air as we step into the patriotic energy in Belize.

Yes, it’s that time of year when Belizeans joyfully express their patriotism, love and pride for Belize! First, we welcome the Battle of Saint Georges Caye on September 10^th when the Baymen in 1798 bravely fought off the Spaniards to protect Belize’s territory, then follows the big day when Belize gained its independence from Great Britian on September 21^st, marking 44 years of independence.

These important milestones remind us that the Jewel remains a nation free and firm in its fundamental beliefs of the supremacy of God and faith in human rights and freedoms, democratic governance and the rule of law, respect for social justice and the protection of individual rights among other important beliefs enshrined in the constitution. Belizeans are gifted with a constitution that asserts that the will of the people should form the basis of a democratic government, and its people are blessed to be able to exercise those rights.

This month, the Prime Minister announced a series of distinguished diplomatic appointments. We take this opportunity to congratulate them all and wish them the very best! A historic milestone happened with the signing of a trilateral agreement with Mexico and Guatemala, endorsing the Calakmul Declaration— a vital commitment to preserving the majestic Great Maya Forest. This pact underscores Belize’s enduring pledge to regional cooperation and environmental stewardship.

In addition, highlighting Belize’s vibrant cultural heritage and growing global presence, the Prime Minister also represented the nation at Japan Expo 2025 in Osaka. Accompanied by BELTRAIDE, NICH, and the Belize Tourism Board, they proudly showcased the rich tapestry of Belizean culture to an international audience.

Meanwhile, Special Envoy H.E. Rossana Briceño continued to champion the well-being of Belizean families. She supported the distribution of 309 boxes of donated goods from the Simply Help Foundation and took part in national consultations on the Families Bill 2025, advocating for inclusive protection for families and older people.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs remained at the forefront of shaping Belize’s role at home and abroad. Under the guidance of Minister Francis Fonseca and CEO H.E. Amalia Mai, the Ministry reaffirmed Belize’s commitment to regional peace through high-level security talks with Guatemala. It also established new diplomatic relations with Sri Lanka and celebrated thirty years of friendship with Cuba.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also advanced its humanitarian priorities through continued collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on refugee protection and asylum reform. At the annual Heads of Mission Encounter, Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Francis Fonseca brought together ambassadors and diplomatic representatives to align on key foreign policy goals such as strengthening Belize’s global engagement and advancing trade, investment, and development priorities. Minister Fonseca also supported cultural milestones such as the 50th anniversary of Carnival and contributed to ongoing efforts to preserve national heritage sites, including Centennial Park.

Moreover, under GOB Movers and Shakers, several ministries made strides in advancing national development. The Ministry of Health and Wellness certified 17 new Community Health Workers in Orange Walk and signed a landmark agreement to support the nutritional needs of people living with HIV.

The Ministry of Human Development launched specialized training to facilitate the implementation of the Belize Disabilities Act.

Sustainability took a leap forward with the Ministry of Transportation’s agreement to introduce Belize’s first electric buses. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Investment intensified efforts to develop the digital sector amid evolving call center policies in the U.S.

And the Ministry of Agriculture hosted a Youth in Agriculture Camp to inspire careers in farming.

It's a powerful reminder that even as the world spins faster, our roots continue to ground us in history, culture, and identity. With over 48 years of experience in banking, insurance, and financial services throughout the Caribbean and beyond, Mr. Nunez has demonstrated exceptional leadership, resilience, and international influence. From his early days at Barclays Bank in Belize to founding his own insurance firm and holding senior roles in the Cayman Islands, his path reflects what is possible with dedication and vision. His story is a powerful reminder that where you start does not define how far you can go.

Hon. John Briceño Announces New Diplomatic Appointments

Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño has announced the appointment of new Ambassadors and diplomatic staff to serve at Belize’s embassies, missions, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Several current ambassadors will continue in their posts, including those representing Belize in Mexico, Guatemala, Belgium, Guyana, and to the Caribbean Community. New Rule Requiring Certain Noncitizens to Complete Alien Registration

As of April 11, 2025, USCIS has implemented a new rule requiring certain noncitizens to complete alien registration. Failure to comply can result in serious penalties—including up to $5,000 in fines or 30 days in jail, plus civil fines of up to $1,000 per day. Additionally, not updating your address within 10 days of moving may lead to deportation unless you can show it was not willful or was reasonably excusable. Alien Registration Requirement

The policy, set to take effect immediately, requires undocumented individuals aged 14 and older to register, provide fingerprints and addresses, and carry proof of registration or face fines and possible jail time.



The Department of Homeland Security emphasized strict enforcement, with Secretary Kristi Noem stating that undocumented individuals should leave the country or face consequences.

Voluntary Return Incentive:

$1,000 and Free Plane Ticket via CBP App

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is currently offering an incentive for individuals who choose voluntary self-departure from the United States.

Through the CBP One app, eligible individuals may receive $1,000 in assistance plus a free plane ticket to facilitate their return to their home country. or another country where they have lawful status.

Mr. Jennison E. Nunez

Jennison E. Nunez was born in the vibrant coastal town of Punta Gorda, in the Toledo District of Belize. Raised in a family dedicated to public service—his father served as a police officer across several districts—Jennison's early life was shaped by movement, adaptation, and resilience. These experiences laid the foundation for a career defined by leadership and international reach.



His education began at St. Peter Claver Primary School and continued across various communities, including Mango Creek, Orange Walk Town, and Belize City, partly due to the displacement caused by Hurricane Hattie in 1961. He completed his primary education at St. Joseph Primary School and went on to attend St. John’s College in Belize City, graduating in 1969.

Jennison launched his professional career with Barclays Bank International in Belize City, where his competence quickly led to transfers to Orange Walk Town (1971) and back to the Albert Street Branch. In 1974, he transitioned to an international role with Barclays in Grand Cayman, marking the start of a distinguished global banking career. By 1979, he had joined the Barclays Regional Head Office in Barbados, with responsibilities extending across several Caribbean territories including Grenada, St. Vincent, St. Lucia, and St. Maarten, as well as multiple branches in Barbados.

Throughout this period, Jennison undertook numerous senior-level banking and professional development courses in Barbados, Nassau, and London, enhancing his leadership and technical skills in the financial sector.

In 1995, after over two decades in banking, Jennison shifted into the insurance industry with Global Life Assurance Co. Ltd. (now Sagicor Life Insurance Co.) in the Cayman Islands. Building on his financial expertise, he founded JEN International Insurance Brokers Co. Ltd. in 2007, serving as Managing Director for over 10 years.

With over 48 years in the financial industry, including 22 years in insurance, Jennison has also held key leadership positions in several industry organizations. These include President of the Life Underwriters Association of the Cayman Islands, Vice President of the Cayman Islands Insurance Association, and Chairman of the Cayman Islands National Insurance Company. He also served on the Board of the Health Insurance Commission.

In recent years, he has expanded into Fund Administration and Private Wealth Management, taking on roles as Money Laundering Reporting Officer and Deputy MLRO, gaining in-depth knowledge of Cayman’s AML regulations.

Now residing in George Town, Grand Cayman, Mr. Nunez serves as a Company Director, continuing to apply his decades of regional financial experience and cross-cultural insight.

To young professionals and members of the Belizean diaspora, especially those just starting their journey—his story offers a reminder: Where you start doesn't define how far you can go. Stay rooted, keep learning, and embrace opportunity with humility and courage. Your contribution matters—not just for your own success, but for the global legacy of Belizeans everywhere.

Mayan Eggs with Chaya

Ingredients:



• 7 eggs
• 20 chopped chaya leaves or spinach
• 1/4 chopped red onion
• 2 tbsp lard or butter
• Handmade tortillas
• Stewed black beans

For Pureed Beans:

• 1/2 kg black beans
• 1 sprig epazote (optional)
• Water for cooking
• 1 habanero chile (optional for heat)
• 1 Xcatik chile (optional for mild heat)
• 2 tbsp lard

Preparation:

For the Mayan Eggs with Chaya:

1. Clean and chop the chaya leaves (or spinach). Cook chaya before eating to remove toxins.
2. Heat lard in a skillet, sauté onion until soft, then add chopped chaya. Cook for 5-7 minutes until wilted.
3. Beat eggs in a bowl, then add them to the skillet with salt. Stir and cook for about 3 minutes, until eggs are done.
4. Serve with handmade tortillas.



For Pureed Beans:

1. Rinse the black beans and cook with epazote in a pot of water for 1-2 hours until tender.
2. Add chopped habanero and Xcatik chiles, and 2 tbsp lard. Cook for another 10 minutes.
3. Blend the beans until smooth. Add water if needed for a thinner consistency.
4. Serve as a side dish with the eggs.

Panades

Ingredients:

• 1 cup corn flour (Maseca)
• 1 cup warm water
• 1/2 teaspoon Recado Rojo (or half a recado ball)
• 1 teaspoon salt (to taste)
• Smoked fish (pulled apart, all bones sorted)
• 2+ cups distilled white vinegar
• 1 onion, diced
• 1 habanero, diced
• Salt to taste
• Oil for frying (vegetable or coconut oil)

Recipe:

1. Sift corn flour, recado, and salt.
2. Mix in water and recado by hand.
3. Let dough rest for 10-15 minutes, then roll into balls.
4. Prepare your filling (seasoned smoked fish).
5. Press dough balls into flat discs with plastic.
6. Add filling, fold, and pinch edges together.
