Honorary Consul's Monthly Message

Welcome to the June Newsletter!

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times” Charles Dickens, Tale of Two Cities

What a month June has been. What is supposed to be filled with lazy summer days at the beach, Fathers Day BBQ's, weddings, graduation ceremonies and gazing at strawberry moons, are overshadowed by the uncertainties happening in the world and even in our own backyard. The world has changed and as a result, so have our lives.

While we cannot be led by fear by the ongoing US immigration policy changes, we must be responsible, stay informed and follow the laws and procedures currently in place. We urge all undocumented Belizean nationals in the US to exercise extreme care and caution when venturing out in public.

We recently had an unfortunate case of a Belizean traveling out of state for an appointment at the Consulate of Belize in Florida and missed her appointment because she was arrested and detained by ICE.

To avoid this, one can apply for an Emergency Travel Document (ETD) at their respective consulate or at the Embassy of Belize in Washington, DC. The ETD allows you to travel directly to Belize. At the Consulate of Belize in Florida you do not have to physically come to the consulate to get one. We can ship or mail it directly to you.

Please contact us to learn more of what is required at 305-755-0276 or email us at florida.reception@mfa.gov.bz. Also, please check the links here to review all the latest US immigration policy changes and developments Here. Please feel free to call or email the consulates in your respective areas or the Embassy of Belize Here.

Can you believe that last month’s edition of the newsletter marked 10 years since we published the first edition? Since then, our readership has grown leaps and bounds thanks to you. We are very grateful for all your positive feedback and comments. It is indeed a labor of love but because of you, we are inspired to put in the time and effort so we can share beautiful and uplifting news and information about our Jewel.

And then the rains came! June is officially the start of “green season” in Belize—aka rainy season. Here in Florida, we’ve been noticing the familiar rhythm of afternoon showers and the scent of rain in the air. June brings with it a quiet magic: the rainforest awakens, the rivers run with fresh rainwater, and the land transforms.

Deep in our lush jungles, where the leaves rustle, is home to the chirping toucans, scarlet macaws and jaguars.

As the rainy season breathes new life into Belize’s lush rainforests, June also brought a wave of exciting progress across the country.

The Honorable John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize, joined global leaders at the UN Ocean Conference in Nice, France, championing sustainable development and signing an MOU with the World Bank Group to promote impactful public-private investments.

Prime Minister Briceño marked the 20th anniversary of the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (5Cs) by attending the groundbreaking ceremony for its new headquarters at the UB campus, a project he helped initiate two decades ago. He also participated in a key meeting on sugar industry recovery with sector leaders and hosted the Miss Universe Belize 2025 delegates, offering his full support to the contestants and the organizing team.

Additionally, the Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Wellness and key partners, launched a nationwide initiative to strengthen early breast cancer detection through specialized training for healthcare professionals.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs unveiled the theme for our 44th Independence: “Belize@44: Stronger Together, Rising Forever,” a timely reflection of our journey so far and the bright future ahead.

In other news, Belize and Taiwan launched Phase 2 of a micro-entrepreneurs’ project, further strengthening bilateral cooperation.

The Honorable Francis Fonseca, in his capacity as Minister of Foreign Affairs, represented Belize at the 55th General Assembly of the Organization of American States. At the Assembly’s closing, Minister Fonseca joined other member states in honoring Belizean Ambassador Nestor Mendez for his outstanding service as outgoing Assistant Secretary General of the OAS.

Meanwhile, CEO Amalia Mai and the Foreign Assistance Committee are hard at work preparing the country for the 2025 hurricane season by updating emergency protocols and ensuring readiness.

If you’re in Florida, click here for your hurricane readiness guide. In Belize, NEMO’s official guide can be found here.

In July, we will bid farewell to Ambassador Lynn Young as he leaves his post as Ambassador of Belize in the United States. During these past four years, we have been fortunate to have Ambassador Young lead and guide us in our work as representatives of the Government of Belize in the USA.

His dedication and hard work were an example to all of us in carrying on the duties of Consuls and Honorary Consuls throughout the USA. Ambassador Young, provided leadership that was kind and considerate, never stinting to give advice and support even in the most difficult of times, while quietly but assuredly pursuing the interests of Belize in the United States and with the Organization of American States.

To say that he will be missed, is truly understating just how much his absence will touch all those who worked with him. We wish him the very best of success in all his future endeavors!

GOB Movers and Shakers featured increased transfer grants for public officers and important dialogues with the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Finance Belize (the official promoter and voice of Belize’s Financial Services industry, driving its growth and sustainable development.) on tax reform, energy access, and wage policy.

BELTRAIDE made advances in supporting Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) through regional Central American Integration System (SICA) integration, while the government and Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) disbursed $1.5 million to assist 549 small-scale farmers.

On the health front, training for the Water and Sanitation for Health Facility Improvement Tool (WASH FIT) took place in partnership with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and Korea.

In addition to providing workshops aimed at improving digital health, emergency communication, and support for assault survivors, police officers received mental health response training, and new wastewater policies were introduced to enhance sanitation.

Belizeans also earned international recognition—Kara Young made Broadway history with her second Tony Award, Captain Gregory Soberanis received a U.S. leadership award, and national events like the Spelling Bee and cycling competitions showcased local talent. Ms. Faith Edgar was crowned Miss World Belize, and we congratulate her and wish her every success! #Belizeansdogreatthingswhereevertheygo.

Belize has a new queen! Isabella Zabaneh was officially crowned Miss Universe Belize 2025 on Saturday night, earning the honor of representing Belize on the international Miss Universe stage in Thailand later this year. Congratulations Isabella, you do Belize proud!

We extend heartfelt congratulations to the other outstanding finalists — Monisha Hyde, Imani Jex, Libny Rodriguez, and Hope Panton — who all showcased remarkable poise, elegance, and intelligence throughout the evening. #Belizeansarebeautiful

And don’t miss this month’s Star of the Month, Ms. Gregoria Pandy—a woman whose journey from Belize to the U.S. is marked by courage, perseverance, and heartfelt community service. #Belizeansdogreatthingswhereevertheygo.

As June winds down, lobster season is officially underway across the country, bringing with it lively lobster festivals you won’t want to miss if you’re in Belize. Check out the places and dates when you can enjoy the first taste of lobster season!

  • San Pedro: July 1–12
  • Placencia: July 4–6
  • Caye Caulker: July 18–20

From beach parties to seafood feasts, it’s a celebration of flavor, community, and coastal joy.

To celebrate the season, why not enjoy a surf and turf dinner with a juicy steak and a perfectly grilled Belizean spiny lobster? Inspired by the talented chefs at Running W Restaurant in San Ignacio, it’s the perfect meal to welcome summer. Be sure to check out our Recipe of the Month section for all the details!

And to end on a sweet note—why not try a slice of cassava pone, lightly covered with coconut cream. Warm, rich, and just the right amount of indulgent, it’s the perfect companion to a summer evening! Find recipe under Street Food Series.

Wherever this season finds you— close to the luscious jungles of Belize, or among the vibrant blooms in Florida—we hope you are well and taking moments to enjoy the beauty that surrounds you.

And don’t forget to check out the rest of this issue, featuring uplifting and engaging segments like Landmark Beauty, Belizeanism of the Month, Tidbits and more!

Thank you for reading the Consulate of Belize in Florida’s newsletter and for always keeping the Jewel in your hearts.

My dear Belizean brothers and sisters,

As we face uncertain times both in the United States and across the globe, I write to you with a message of unity, gratitude, and hope. The challenges we see unfolding—from economic pressures and social tensions to global conflict and climate change—remind us of the importance of standing together as a people. In such times, the bonds of family, community, and shared identity become even more vital.

It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as Belize’s Ambassador to the United States over the past four years. As my term comes to a close at the end of July, I want to express my deepest appreciation for the warm support and encouragement I have received from you, the Belizean diaspora. Your dedication to Belize, your advocacy, and your willingness to contribute to our national development have been a constant source of inspiration.

In response to your needs and feedback, the Embassy has recently introduced a ticketing system to improve the quality and responsiveness of our consular services. Our Consulates in Miami, LA, Chicago and New York are all connected to receive and handle tickets. You can now submit service requests online through the Embassy’s website at https://www.belizeembassyusa.mfa.gov.bz/ or by sending an email to consular.service.usa@mfa.gov.bz. Additionally, we encourage you to visit the Embassy’s Knowledge Portal at https://embassyofbelize.freshdesk.com/support/home, where you’ll find answers to frequently asked questions and other helpful resources. We hope these improvements make it easier and faster for you to access the services you need.

A new Ambassador will be named shortly, and I ask that you welcome and support him with the same warmth and unity that you extended to me. Our work as Belizeans abroad continues, and your role remains as crucial as ever in representing the very best of who we are.

As I bid farewell, I do so with immense pride in our community and with confidence that, together, we will continue to uplift and strengthen our beloved Belize.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Lynn R. Young

Gregoria S. Pandy

Born to William Percival Pandy and Rosel Hemans in Pembroke Hall, Corozal District Belize, Gregoria S. Pandy grew up in a close-knit community where family values, hard work, and perseverance were instilled from a young age. As the daughter of a farmer, She was raised with a deep appreciation for education, service, and generosity—values that would later shape her journey.

Though opportunities were limited in Belize at the time, Gregoria was determined to push beyond barriers. Earning her Associate Degree in Information Technology laid the groundwork for her future endeavors, teaching her the importance of knowledge, determination, and continuous self-improvement.

In 1965, seeking better opportunities, Gregoria immigrated to the United States. Her path as a young immigrant was far from easy—marked by cultural adjustments, financial hardship, and personal sacrifice. Yet, through sheer perseverance, she overcame each barrier. Earning U.S. citizenship became one of her most meaningful accomplishments, symbolizing a triumph over adversity and a deep commitment to building a better life for her family.

In the early 2000s, Gregoria turned her focus toward advocacy and leadership within the Belizean community in Miami. Through her involvement with the Belize Association, she became a vital connector—helping fellow immigrants find jobs, secure housing, and navigate legal systems, all while promoting cultural pride and unity. Her work empowered others to transition not just physically, but emotionally and socially, into a new life while staying anchored in their Belizean identity.

Her entrepreneurial spirit also flourished. Together with her son, she co-founded Monarch Excursions LLC, a boat chartering company that quickly became a leader in Miami’s adventure tourism scene. The venture wasn’t just a business—it was a platform for empowerment and sustainability. Building on this momentum, she later established White Hawk Farms LLC in Georgia, a community-focused agricultural initiative supplying fresh produce to local families. Both enterprises reflect Gregoria’s broader mission: to create opportunity while giving back.

Her commitment to education has remained a central pillar throughout her life. Gregoria launched a tuition assistance program for students at St. John’s Junior College in Belize City, providing young people the same chance she once fought so hard for. For her, education is not just a pathway to success—it’s a vehicle for transformation.

Perhaps her most enduring legacy is the family she nurtured. Gregoria’s values of discipline, service, and integrity live on in her children:

  • CSM Phillip D. Pandy
  • MSG Alexander G. Valcin
  • SFC Dominic J. Valcin
  • Glennis Godoy
  • Angelita C. Sorto

Three of her sons served honorably in the United States military. Her daughter Angelita serves as an administrator in the Miami-Dade Fire Department, and Glennis has followed in her entrepreneurial footsteps. Through them, her spirit continues—resilient, compassionate, and bold.

Looking ahead, Gregoria remains committed to building bridges between Belize and the United States. Her vision includes strengthening bilateral ties, expanding her educational programs, and empowering underserved communities through cultural preservation and economic opportunity.

Gregoria S. Pandy’s story is not only one of personal achievement, but one of community transformation. Her quiet strength, visionary leadership, and enduring compassion have touched countless lives. Through her work, her family, and her unwavering commitment to service, she continues to inspire the next generation—rising from humble beginnings to become a beacon of hope and resilience across borders.

We are happy to call you our Star of the Month!

Isabella Zabaneh was officially crowned Miss Universe Belize 2025 on June 28, 2025, and will represent Belize at the Miss Universe pageant in Thailand later this year.

Born in Dallas, Texas, and deeply connected to her Belizean heritage, Zabaneh holds a Bachelor's degree in International Studies and is pursuing a Master's in Professional Communication. She brings a strong academic foundation and cultural pride to her role as national ambassador.

This year’s pageant featured five finalists. Monisha Hyde and Hope Panton were named first and second runners-up, respectively. Panton also received the Miss Photogenic award, while Imani Jex was named Miss Congeniality.

Zabaneh now begins her journey to the international stage, carrying the pride and spirit of Belize with distinction.

On June 6th, Mr. Ralph Fonseca passed away at his home in Belize City at the age of 75.

He was widely recognized for his sharp political acumen, bold leadership, and significant contributions to shaping Belize’s economic and policy direction. His legacy within the PUP and Belize’s national development will endure.

The Honorary Consul of Belize in Florida, Ms. Janine Sylvestre, and the staff at the Consulate extend heartfelt condolences to his wife, Mrs. Donna Fonseca; his daughters, Alessandra Fonseca and Giselle Fonseca Montalvo; and Riana Zackery. Mr. Fonseca is predeceased by his son, Ralph Fonseca Jr.
