“أحب الحقيقة حتى لو كانت تؤذيك ، وتكره الكذب حتى لو خدمتك" "Love truth even if it harms you, and hate lies even if they serve you." Inspiring Quotes: African Proverbs to Guide you through life.
This proverb resonated more than any other as I read through all 14 of the inspiring African proverbs listed in the article I was reading. Growing up, it was perhaps the most important lesson my parents taught me and my two sisters. In the end the lie was always more serious than the “misdemeanor” we were trying to cover up. Indeed the truth as ugly as iit is, will set you free and you will be able to live the authentic life you are meant to enjoy. The truth is the same story you will say today, tomorrow or next year and that in itself is liberating!
Isn’t the month of May so beautiful? In the last edition of the newsletter, we were so excited to step into May with all its beautiful flora and fauna in Belize and in the US where most of us are living. We hope that you are enjoying this last beautiful day of May with all its splendor.
Did you give your Mom a huge big hug and kiss and tell her how much you love her and thank her for all the sacrifice, love, dedication and hard work she put in to give us a better life? Get ready to do the same in June with our beautiful fathers! Enjoy them for they protect, love and guide us through all our life’s challenges. There is not a day that I don’t miss my amazing father and I’m so grateful for all that he did for me and my family.
We have officially transitioned into summer with its hot days and warm nights hopefully by the beach or whereever there is a fresh beautiful body of water around to keep cool.
Another momentous and historic occasion that happened in May was the election of the new Pope! Habemus Papam - History was made with the election of the first American pope—marking a significant moment for the Catholic community. Every new papacy brings a fresh start and a chance to connect faith with the world we live in today. As we look ahead, we hope this new pope can champion unity, understanding, and peace in these challenging times.
We also observed Mental Health Day—a powerful reminder of the importance of caring for ourselves and each other. It’s okay not to be okay, and asking for help is a sign of strength. If you're struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out to helplines or support networks. For those who have experienced loss, we see you and share in your grief. Sometimes, a simple phone call, a shared coffee, or a walk with a friend can mean more than words. Together, through empathy and connection, we can build a stronger, more compassionate community.
This month was filled with meaningful milestones for Belize. Prime Minister John Briceño continued to champion Belize’s growth—spotlighting the BPO sector’s role in supporting over 16,000 jobs and contributing $150 million in salaries. He also reaffirmed his commitment to expanding quality healthcare with the nationwide rollout of the National Health Insurance program by 2025. In the environmental space, his leadership is backing conservation efforts in Chiquibul and co-management of 28 protected areas, while support for banana farmers through visa digitization and improved financing is helping breathe new life into the agricultural sector.
First Lady H.E. Rossana Briceño stayed busy too. From a creative art session with special education students (SPED) and a visiting university team to the launch of new workplace lactation centers with UNICEF, she continues to uplift Belizean families and communities. Her efforts to engage men and boys in gender equality also took a big step forward through a new training initiative with SCLAN Belize and Restore Belize. Internationally, her conversation with Ukraine’s First Lady, Olena Zelenska, opened the door to future collaboration on a global scale.
On the foreign affairs front, Belize’s global presence remained strong. Minister Fonseca represented Belize at the 28th Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) meeting, where leaders tackled regional priorities like Haiti. CEO Amalia Mai secured Taiwanese support for institutional strengthening and co-chaired a key UN meeting on sustainable development. Belize also marked 51 years of CARICOM membership with the upcoming Belize-CARICOM Expo 2025 and participated in the XIX SICA-Japan Forum, continuing to build bridges far beyond our borders.
Under “GOB Movers and Shakers,” several pioneering developments took place. Tracy Panton made history as the first female Leader of the Opposition in the House of Representatives. The Government announced GST-free weekends for back-to-school and Christmas starting in August 2025 to ease household expenses while the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology hosted the inaugural National EdTech Summit, highlighting Belize’s growing focus on digital learning.
Make sure to check out the other sections in our newsletter to see all the exciting things happening back home! From the opening of a new school in Cristo Rey and the first national EdTech Summit to Stephanie Sylvestre making history as the first Belizean-born woman to create an AI model, there’s so much to celebrate. With empowering Girls in ICT events, the launch of eco-friendly electric taxis, and major investments in sustainable farming, Belize is shining bright with innovation and growth. Our Jewel may be small, but it’s mighty—and we’re proud to share all the progress and positivity happening across the country!
In this edition’s Star of the Month, we invite you to read about Pierre Obando—a talented visual artist and educator whose journey from Belize City to New York City embodies resilience, creativity, and cultural pride. His artistic achievements and global experiences offer heartfelt messages to the Belizean diaspora and remind us all of the power in staying true to your craft and your roots. Don’t miss it!
May marks the start of pepper season in Belize, making it the perfect time to enjoy a delicious oxtail stew bursting with rich flavors and spicy peppers. To balance the heat, this month’s street food series celebrates one of Belize’s favorite fruits—mangoes! In the midst of mango season, we’re treating you to a creamy, refreshing mango sorbet—a sweet delight packed with the juicy goodness of Belize’s famous mangoes.
On Thursday, May 22nd, a charter flight from the United States arrived at Philip Goldson International Airport, bringing back 21 Belizeans who had been living in the U.S. illegally. After completing immigration processing, they were taken to the Queen Street Police Station in Belize City for screening before being released. The Airbus A321 carried a total of 150 deportees, most of whom were from Peru and Chile.
We encourage everyone to review the latest immigration laws and guidelines issued by USCIS Here, particularly those affecting undocumented immigrants currently residing in the United States.
Undocumented individuals are now being advised to consider voluntary self-departure as a way to avoid potential ICE detention. To support this, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is offering an incentive through the CBP One app: eligible participants may receive $1,000 in assistance along with a free plane ticket to help facilitate their return to their home country. Remember, you’re not alone, our team is here to support you during this challenging time. For contact information of Belizean consular offices in the U.S. and more details, please visit the Housekeeping Business section or Click Here.

Conclave has elected Robert Francis Cardinal Prevost as the 267th Bishop of Rome. Formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, Pope Leo XIV is the first American in history to be elected pope. As the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State, he was chosen during the 2025 papal conclave as the successor to Pope Francis.
Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, he was raised in the nearby suburb of Dolton. His parents, Louis Marius Prevost—of French and Italian descent—and Mildred Martínez—of Spanish descent—instilled in him a rich cultural heritage. He has two brothers, Louis Martín and John Joseph.
Before his election, he served as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, a key role in the governance of the global Church. He is also the first Augustinian to ascend to the papacy. Though born in North America, Pope Leo XIV is the second pope from the Americas, following Pope Francis. Unlike the Argentine pontiff, however, Prevost comes from the northern part of the continent and spent many years in Peru as a missionary before being elected Prior General of the Order of Saint Augustine for two consecutive terms.
He was created cardinal by Pope Francis at the Consistory of September 30, 2023, and was assigned the Diaconate of Saint Monica, officially taking possession of his titular church on January 28, 2024. On October 4, 2023, Pope Francis appointed him a member of several major Vatican dicasteries: for Evangelization, for the Doctrine of the Faith, for the Eastern Churches, for the Clergy, for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, for Culture and Education, for Legislative Texts, and to the Pontifical Commission for the Vatican City State. On February 6, 2025, Pope Francis further elevated him to the Order of Bishops, granting him the title of the Suburbicarian Church of Albano, one of the highest distinctions in the College of Cardinals. Just three days later, on February 9, he celebrated Mass in St. Peter’s Square—presided over by Pope Francis—for the Jubilee of the Armed Forces, the second major celebration of the Holy Year of Hope. During the most recent hospitalization of his predecessor, Prevost presided over the Rosary for Pope Francis’s health in Saint Peter’s Square on March 3.

Pierre Obando is a visual artist and art educator born in Belize City, Belize. He currently lives in New York City, where he maintains an active studio practice and teaches in higher education. His artwork engages drawing and painting, through both improvisational and methodical approaches, with a primary focus on fine arts.
Obando’s early life was marked by frequent relocations and cultural adaptations. He spent his childhood in Belize City and St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands before moving to Miami, Florida. His teenage years included a two-year period in Jackson, Mississippi, before he returned to Miami to complete high school. These moves—often made without the support of extended family—shaped his worldview and resilience, qualities that continue to inform both his artistic practice and personal life.
Obando’s passion for art surfaced early during his school years in St. Croix. Alongside a competitive junior tennis career, he pursued formal art education with dedication. He began his college studies at Freed-Hardeman University in Tennessee on a partial tennis scholarship, where taking foundational art classes led him to shift his focus to commercial art. He later transferred to the New World School of the Arts in Miami, where he ultimately gravitated toward fine arts and earned his Bachelor of Fine Art in 1997.
In pursuit of deeper artistic exploration, Obando was accepted into the prestigious Master of Fine Arts program at Hunter College, City University of New York. While at Hunter, he also studied abroad at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, where he gained valuable exposure to European art and culture. He completed his MFA in 2001. Throughout his education and career, Obando has worked across multiple mediums, including drawing, painting, printmaking, and photography. Drawing and painting, however, have remained his primary modes of expression. After completing his MFA, he established his studio in New York City and committed to a sustained studio practice.

|
Obando has exhibited across the United States and internationally, with his work featured in both solo and group exhibitions. He has also participated in several notable artist residencies, including the Atlantic Center for the Arts (Florida), Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts (Nebraska), and Alice Yard (Trinidad and Tobago).
In addition to his studio practice, Obando has contributed to the academic sphere through teaching positions at various institutions. Most notably, he served as a full-time visiting assistant professor in the J. Irwin Miller Architecture Program at Indiana University Bloomington.

Navigating the highly competitive New York art scene has posed significant challenges, particularly in staying true to an authentic creative vision amid external trends and commercial pressures. Obando remains committed to developing his work through personal inquiry and artistic integrity. Periods without exhibition opportunities have tested his perseverance, but through consistent studio practice, he has continued to evolve as an artist.
Obando’s work was recently the subject of a solo exhibition in New York City, reviewed by The New York Times and Two Coats of Paint. These recognitions highlight his growing influence and the depth of his artistic practice. He actively engages with the Belizean creative community, both locally and abroad, aspiring to serve as a role model and advocate for fellow Belizean artists. Through dialogue and collaboration with other Belizean writers, artists, and filmmakers, Obando fosters a sense of shared identity and cultural enrichment.

Pierre Obando has participated in numerous prestigious artist residencies and has received several notable awards throughout his career, including the following:

While Obando draws inspiration from many canonical artists, his greatest admiration is reserved for those who pursue their craft with humility and without widespread recognition. These unsung creators fuel his commitment to an authentic and meaningful artistic life. For him, art is not only a vocation but also a way of understanding and appreciating life’s vitality—an impulse that motivates his continued contribution to society through his work.

Outside the studio, Obando finds joy in viewing art in exhibitions and fellow artists’ studios, as well as in reading and collecting literature across a range of subjects. His growing personal library reflects a lifelong love of learning and may one day serve as a resource for others. Looking ahead, his goals include continued artistic growth and expanded opportunities to exhibit and have his work collected by institutions. Both personally and professionally, he remains committed to enriching the cultural life of the Belizean diaspora and to furthering his contributions through creation and education.
To aspiring artists, Obando encourages working with the resources and opportunities at hand. Acknowledging the privilege inherent in pursuing a creative life, he stresses the importance of staying grounded in one’s purpose.
To his fellow Belizeans, he offers a heartfelt message: “Always let people know you are from Belize. Doing so adds to and nourishes a sense of what it means to be Belizean.”
