Message from the Honorary Consul

The heat is on, literally and figuratively.

If you are in Belize, the intensity of the humidity is through the roof and has held on for over a month. The weather forecast is predicting a tropical storm descending upon the Jewel within the next few days, sure to be a welcome reprieve. The dog days of summer are here so be sure to stay cool and hydrated.

The heat is also ramping up its intensity on world affairs. We can only pray for peace to prevail because only through peace can we enjoy true liberty and prosperity.

May has otherwise been a lovely month with cause for celebrating. In Belize we honored our beloved Mothers on May 10th, enjoyed Labor Day and Commonwealth Day holidays and the much-anticipated annual Chocolate Festival in Punta Gorda. Belize makes some of the most delicious chocolate from natural cacao that has a loyal following around the world.

As if the month had not already given us plenty to enjoy, May is also marked by the rare occurrence of two full moons, with the second set to illuminate the night sky on May 31st, bringing an especially memorable close to the month.

In just a few days we will be celebrating Father’s Day when we get to spend time with our dads who help to shape us into the men and women, we are today. Statistics show that when the father is present, the delicate fabric that balances the family, is nurtured and thriving.

I will be thinking about my daddy in heaven whom I miss every day. He was a quiet but powerful and steady force in my life. He led by example not by control and he was the most discrete and private person I know, traits I most admire. May all our fathers in heaven rest easy.

In the United States, Memorial Day was celebrated on the last Monday of May to honor the fallen soldiers who sacrificed their lives so that their children and children’s children may continue to enjoy the freedom they fought so valiantly for. And with our close neighbor bordered to the north of us, we celebrated Cinco de Mayo, hopefully with tacos and tequila.

And what better way to enjoy the heat of summer and all the celebrations ahead than with the light and refreshing recipes we are bringing you this month? After all, who wants to spend hours over a hot stove in this weather? Try your hand at a delicious shrimp and avocado salad bursting with citrus flavor, along with a Belizean dessert favorite, Cold Cake, our version of the British classic Trifle Cake.

There is a time to play and a time to work and the leaders of Belize kept the wheels of the nation churning towards advancement and productivity in important sectors centered on youth empowerment, mental health, education, innovation, and international cooperation.

The Prime Minister, the Honorable John Briceño remained actively engaged in discussions surrounding the economy, employment, and national development, while also supporting initiatives aimed at preparing Belizeans for an increasingly digital and interconnected future.

Across the country, community outreach and youth-centered programs continued encouraging healthy relationships, violence prevention, and emotional well-being.

In observance of Mental Health Awareness Month, on May 19th, First Lady Rossana Briceño also emphasized the importance of compassion, kindness, and meaningful human connection as essential parts of a healthier society.

Belize further strengthened diplomatic and bilateral relations with international partners, including India, Honduras, and Germany, while GOB ministries continued advancing initiatives in agriculture, economic transformation, migration policy, and sustainable development. Ms. Alysia Imani Norales

Ms. Alysia Imani Norales, a native of Belmopan, Belize, currently resides in Clarksville, Tennessee. She recently earned a Master of Science degree in Computer Science and Quantitative Methods with a concentration in Predictive Analytics from Austin Peay State University, where she also received a Graduate Certificate in Data Science. A passionate technologist, writer, musician, and cultural advocate, Ms. Norales combines technology, education, storytelling, and the arts to create meaningful impact for Belize and its diaspora.

Raised in a family that valued education, creativity, and community involvement, Ms. Norales developed an early love for music, writing, and storytelling. Alongside her brother, she performed as part of a singing duo throughout Belize and on national television, experiences that inspired her interest in songwriting, music production, and theatre. During high school, she performed as Sharpay Evans in a junior production of Disney’s High School Musical while also developing a growing fascination with computers and innovation. She later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology from the University of Belize.

Determined to merge her creative and technical passions, Ms. Norales became the co-creator, co-writer, and co-composer of Nora, the first international Belizean musical production dedicated to preserving Belizean history and cultural storytelling. She and her team conducted extensive research at the Belize National Archives to ensure the production authentically reflected Belizean identity, while she independently learned music production software to incorporate Belizean sounds into the theatrical experience

At Austin Peay State University, Ms. Norales graduated with honors and a 3.9 GPA while serving in multiple leadership roles, including Graduate Teaching Assistant for the Mathematics and Statistics Department, President of the International Students Organization, and Staff Writer for The All State publication. During this time, she balanced academic responsibilities with personal challenges, including homesickness, grief, and navigating a male-dominated field, emerging as both a leader and mentor through perseverance and community support.

Among her notable accomplishments is the development of Sani, a trilingual chatbot designed to translate English and Spanish into Garifuna to support language preservation through technology. Her work in leadership, education, and innovation has earned numerous recognitions, including the Excellence in Peer Education Award, Student Leader of the Month Award, first place for Best Student Oral Presentation at the Tennessee Academy of Science, induction into the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society, and writing awards from The All State publication. She is also the inaugural winner of the Belize Youth Rising Star Talent Competition and previously served as Vice President of the Rotaract Club of Belmopan, participating in several community outreach initiatives.

Ms. Norales credits much of her inspiration to her parents, whose

dedication to education, music, advocacy, and community service continues to motivate her commitment to Belize’s growth and cultural preservation. Deeply proud of her Belizean identity, she remains passionate about using technology, music, and storytelling to inspire innovation and uplift Belizeans at home and abroad.

In her personal time, Ms. Norales enjoys songwriting, music production, and creative storytelling. She is currently developing another musical inspired by Belizean folklore while preparing Sani for public use. Through her work, she hopes to encourage young Belizeans to embrace creativity, resilience, education, and innovation, proudly carrying the message: “Belize to the world.”
