OPC Inquires about DC Water Response to Flooding As the Advocate for DC Water Consumers

September 16, 2020

People's Counsel Sandra Mattavous-Frye wants you to know that the Office of the People's Counsel is the statutory advocate for DC Water consumers, and in the wake of the recent flooding and sewer backups, OPC may be able to help with the claims process.
Yesterday, the People's Counsel sent a letter to DC Water General Manager David L. Gadis requesting information about the September 10 flooding.

Specifically, OPC is interested in DC Water's response to the damage to the affected neighborhoods, what measures will be put in place to mitigate the impacts of such flooding in the future, and what proposals DC Water is considering to assist its customers beyond expansion of the Backwater Valve Rebate Program.

OPC encourages consumers to join DC Water's virtual town hall this evening at 6:30 pm, aimed primarily at residents who live in the most heavily impacted areas of the floods.  OPC staff also will view the town hall.

You can join today's 6:30 PM virtual meeting via: Microsoft Teams @ http://bit.ly/FloodingTownHall or call (855)-756-7520, ext.66560

If you experience a sewer backup, immediately report it to DC Water's emergency line at (202) 612-3400.  Most often in the past, cleanup and damages have been the responsibility of the property owner.

If you think DC Water may be responsible, you can call (202) 787-2052 or file a claim at https://www.dcwater.com/claims.  If you have questions about the claims process or have any other service or billing issue, contact OPC's Water Services Division at (202) 727-3071, email [email protected] or file a complaint at https://opc-dc.gov/dc-water-complaints-only
