Fraud alert: Email scam
EMAILS CLAIMING TO BE FROM FATHER RYAN In the past few months, there have been reports of parishioners and parish staff receiving emails claiming to be from their parish priest, and requesting that the recipient send gift cards or initiate wire transfers. Someone is setting up fake email addresses using the pastor's name. This is happening across the Archdiocese of Seattle. Please be aware that this is a scam. Father Ryan will not email you to ask for a favor or to purchase gift cards. If you are in doubt about whether an email is legitimate, please contact Maria Laughlin, 206-382-4284.

Grounded in the Gospel, the wisdom of Catholic tradition and Catholic Social Teaching, he offers practical ways to educate ourselves and advocate for racial justice. February 12, 2022, 9:00am-1pm (Zoom). Sponsored by North Seattle Parishes and the Intercommunity Peace & Justice Center. Registration, www.ipjc.org/racial-justice/.

News and Notices
POSTPONED: February 5 Gala Concert We regretfully announce that our Gala Concert originally planned for New Year’s Eve and rescheduled to February 5, 2022 must once again be postponed. With COVID infections from the Omicron variant on the decrease but still currently at around 5,000 new cases per day in King County (as of 1/20/2022), we feel that it would be unwise and not in the best interests of public health to present a choral concert until the transmission of Omicron has reached more reasonable levels. The new concert date is to be announced after the threat from Omicron has passed, but it will not occur until after Easter. The St. James music staff appreciates your patience and understanding as we navigate through these bumps and obstacles preventing us from a full return to our live concert series.

MASS WITH ANOINTING OF THE SICK On Friday, February 11, the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, Father Ryan will celebrate a special Mass including the sacrament of the anointing of the sick. If you are seriously ill, facing surgery, or experiencing the weakness that comes with old age, you are encouraged to celebrate this sacrament of healing.

SINCE I BEEN DOWN: A Film, A Conversation, A Call to Action Co-Sponsored by the St. James Restorative Justice Committee  This is a film about Kimonti Carter. Although sentenced to 700 years in prison, he became an inspirational role model within the prison system. This film unravels why children commit violent crime and how these children–now adults–are breaking free from their fate by creating a model of justice that is transforming their lives, our humanity and the quality of life for all our children. The film is available to watch in your own homes, January 30-February 6, with virtual discussion on February 6, 7:00-8:30pm. Registration, Patrick Barredo, pbarredo@stjames-cathedral.org.

FAITH FRIENDS Do you know a child or teen age 7-18 with physical, cognitive and/or intellectual disabilities? Faith Friends is a unique blend of our Faith Mentor, children’s faith formation program, and an inclusion ministry. Information, faithfriends@stjames-cathedral.org.

PREPARES (Pregnancy and Parenting Support) is a nurturing response of the Catholic community in Washington State to “walk the journey” with pregnant and parenting women, men, and families with children up to age 5 who find themselves lacking a healthy support network. The program, an initiative of our state’s bishops, came into being five years ago. Around the state, PREPARES has been active in helping provide basic needs to parents and their children, organizing parent support groups, providing opportunities for parents and children to get together, and family companions to share relationships with a parent in the community. For more information, see https://preparesforlife.org and https://ccsww.org/get-help/child-youth-family-services/prepares/. In our parish, our initial efforts to initiate PREPARES had some success but have fallen by the wayside over the years. It’s time to resurrect the program here. For PREPARES to become active at St. James, we need volunteers. Volunteers need to attend a PREPARES orientation dealing with important rules and information about working with families. Volunteer activities include collecting and distributing donated items for children, mentoring, serving as parish coordinator, and more. Information, Ted Nutting, theodorenutting@msn.com.
Journeying Together: Synod update
JOURNEYING TOGETHER: PARTICIPATING IN THE SYNOD The local phase of the Synod is getting underway! A synod is a gathering of the Church. The word literally means “together on the way,” and that is the primary question the Synod is asking: How have you experienced the Church that “journeys together”? And how are we called to journey together in the future? Beginning in Lent and continuing into Easter Time, every member of the Cathedral Parish will be invited to participate in a Synod gathering to reflect on and share our experiences of Church. Keep an eye on the bulletin for details in the coming weeks.
