ZOOM
ZOOM 5.0: TIME TO UPDATE
The latest Zoom version (5.0) was released yesterday, so be sure to update your version! Key new features include:

  • AES 256-bit GCM encryption: Zoom meetings are now encrypted at a higher level than previously, which better protects against malicious entities tampering with meetings or intercepting meeting audio/video/screen share data
  • Non-UC Merced meeting participants are indicated via an icon

While it is always best practice to update your Zoom client regularly, Zoom has announced that ALL Zoom users must upgrade to Zoom 5.0 by May 30, 2020 . As of that date, upgrade to 5.0 will be required to join any Zoom meeting.
ZOOM TIP:
NONVERBAL PARTICIPATION
As a meeting host, you can change your Zoom settings to include nonverbal feedback options for participants. These options allow participants in your meetings to do things like raise their hand or answer yes without having to unmute.

This is especially helpful for meeting hosts trying to manage large meetings and prevent people talking over each other.
ADOBE CC
FREE TEMPORARY ADOBE CC ACCESS
Adobe has provided free temporary at-home access to Adobe Creative Cloud for students and faculty impacted by COVID-19 campus closures through May 31, 2020.
POTENTIAL LIGHTROOM ISSUES
Taking advantage of the free Adobe CC access? Be aware that cloud-first apps like Lightroom CC, Lightroom Mobile, or Adobe Fresco may not work as expected if you do not have a paid account with Creative Cloud storage. Quick fix: use Lightroom Classic instead of Lightroom CC.
UPDATES FOR FACULTY
Facilitating Remote Exam Integrity: Respondus
Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor are two tools that can help faculty address concerns of assessment integrity during remote exams.
Wednesday, May 6, 2:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Join Academic & Emerging Technologies for an interactive Zoom session while we go over the Respondus options and how to set them up in CatCourses.
CETL: REDUCING COGNITIVE LOAD
We have known for some time that high levels of stress can wreak havoc on our overall health. COVID-19 and the ensuing changes to everyone's personal lives have certainly heightened levels of stress and anxiety for many in our community.

For first-generation and/or underrepresented minority college students, moving into emergency remote instruction (ERI) is an unfamiliar academic environment that may activate or amplify these physical and psychological reactions. The increased demands that remote learning place on students have increased their cognitive load and pose additional risks to deep and lasting learning.
ONE NOTE: NOTEBOOK UPDATES
Microsoft has released a new OneNote Class Notebook Add-in. Update your version and install the Add-in for the best One Note performance.

UC MERCED ALERT! Some users are unknowingly creating extremely large OneNote files, which is impacting performance for all users. To avoid this, the size of OneNote pages and/or attachments will now be limited to 50mb.
UC MERCED LIBRARY ZOOM SESSIONS
The UC Merced Library is hosting additional 20-minute Zoom sessions to highlight digital resources in support of remote teaching and research.
HathiTrust Digital Library’s Emergency Temporary Access Service

Access millions of electronic books, temporarily available through the HathiTrust Digital Library’s  Emergency Temporary Access Services  (HT ETAS).
Upcoming Zoom sessions to demonstrate access:

Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE)

JoVE content is secured beyond June 30th for the upcoming academic year.  Zoom sessions introduce JoVE Video Journal and JoVE Science Education with materials for instructors teaching undergraduate students scientific fundamentals.
Upcoming Zoom sessions to demonstrate access:

CATCOURSES FEATURE: SCHEDULER
Office hours are great, but sometimes a one-on-one meeting to check in about a project or grade is necessary. For instructors who want to create one-on-one sessions without the hassle of sending a dozen messages back and forth, use the Canvas calendar tool called Scheduler .

Scheduler blocks off time on the course calendar and allows an instructor to create individual meetings that students can sign up for. Instructors can either add their Zoom meeting information in the Details window when creating the appointments, or have students add their Zoom meeting information in the Comments section when they sign up for a specific time slot.
