The 2024 UBCM Convention will be held in Vancouver the week of September 16 - 20. Reservations for the 2024 hotel blocks opens at 9:00 am, Tuesday, October 10, 2023. Pre-reservations and waitlists will not be accepted by the hotels.

Province tables Emergency and Disaster Management Act


Yesterday, the Province introduced new emergency management legislation: the Emergency and Disaster Management Act. Once brought into force, it will replace the current Emergency Program Act. UBCM has previously summarized some of the key changes that will impact local governments.

Local Government Leadership Academy Forum registration now open 


The Annual LGLA Forum brings together staff and elected officials from local governments to explore innovative collaborations with their communities, and drive positive transformation. The 2024 forum, Empowering Communities: Leading Change Together, will explore strategies to strengthen citizen engagement, foster inclusive decision-making, and build resilient and sustainable local communities. 


The Forum is open to elected officials and senior staff from local governments and First Nations. Register through CivicInfo. The forum will be at the Radisson Airport Vancouver Hotel in Richmond, January 31-February 2, 2024. 


Additional Information for Next Generation 911 Funding


UBCM is administering $60 million in funding to support local preparedness for the implementation of Next Generation 911, and to provide funding to eligible recipients to support the transition of existing 911 services to NG911. We have had numerous questions about base funding and have updated the program materials to provide more information.

Rail safety information session


Transport Canada is presenting an information session for local governments on railway grade crossing safety, and the regulatory requirements of the federal Grade Crossings Regulations. Local government staff and elected officials may register for the information session by emailing Transport Canada. The information session will be presented online via MS Teams.

Lower Mainland LGA’s CivX event


The Lower Mainland Local Government Association is hosting its annual CivX event in partnership with CivicInfo on November 29-30, 2023. The free, online event showcases post-secondary partnerships and successes around local government learning.
