Letter from the CEO

Dear Cook County Health friends and partners,

I am proud to announce that Cook County Health was recently recognized by the American Heart Association and the American College of Surgeons for the quality care we provide our patients.

Cook County Health received the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines® - Heart Failure Gold Plus quality achievement award for its commitment to improving outcomes for patients with heart failure and stroke.

Our cardiology team has been doing amazing work in the care of patients with heart disease, including establishing a trans-catheter mitral valve repair (MitraClip) program and providing patients access to TAVR procedures. We are grateful to be recognized by the AHA for ensuring patients receive the high-quality, emergent services they need.

In addition, Stroger Hospital was reaccredited by the Commission on Cancer (CoC), which is a prestigious recognition awarded to cancer programs that demonstrate a commitment to providing high-quality, comprehensive cancer care.

Accreditation by the CoC signifies that a cancer program meets or exceeds stringent criteria set forth by the organization, ensuring that patients receive exceptional care throughout their cancer journey. This accreditation serves as a mark of distinction and assures patients and their families that they are receiving care from a program that adheres to the highest standards of cancer treatment, research, and patient support.

I am grateful to our cardiology, neurology, and oncology teams, and all of our staff who support these programs by providing exceptional care every day. Cook County Health is working diligently to make the health system a provider of choice, and clinical recognitions such as these help demonstrate the high-quality care we offer. We strive to care for our patients like family because, at Cook County Health, your health has a home.

Sincerely,

Israel Rocha, Jr.
CEO

Flavored Liquid Nicotine Sale Restricted in Unincorporated Cook County

On May 25, 2023, the Cook County Board of Commissioners amended the Cook County Youth Tobacco Control Ordinance (Ord. 14-1421), restricting the sale of all flavored liquid nicotine products used in e-cigarettes and vapes.

Beginning July 23, 2023, tobacco retailers in unincorporated suburban Cook County will no longer be able to sell flavored liquid nicotine products. Retailers who violate the new amendment will be subject to a fine of up to $5,000 per offense.

Smoking causes about 90 percent of all lung cancer deaths in the United States. Restricting the sale of flavored liquid nicotine products will help prevent:

  • Use of tobacco products – the leading cause of preventable diseases and deaths in the U.S.
  • Young people from becoming addicted to nicotine and harming the parts of their developing brains that control attention, learning, mood, and impulse control.
  • Tobacco-related health disparities among populations targeted by tobacco advertising.

To ensure compliance, Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH), in collaboration with the Cook County Sheriff’s Department will conduct random, unannounced inspections at locations where tobacco products are sold. CCDPH also launched an outreach and awareness campaign to inform the licensed tobacco retailers and the public about changes to this ordinance. For more information, click here.
