July 2026

Dear Cook County Health friends and partners,

As we continue to navigate the upcoming changes to Medicaid, I wanted to follow up and provide you with updates regarding the recent launch of Get Medicaid Facts.com, our microsite and communications toolkit designed to help Medicaid enrollees and local organizations prepare for the eligibility changes brought on by the 2025 federal budget bill (H.R. 1).

As a reminder, an estimated 400,000 Illinoisans risk losing their Medicaid coverage, and research has shown nearly half of individuals don’t know that changes are coming; providing residents with the information they need to stay informed and covered is critical.

That was the impetus of Get Medicaid Facts.com – providing residents and organizations with a hub that has centralized and simplified information about enrollment changes, while making that information shareable. Many of you contributed to this resource through our Medicaid Impact Workgroup. Thank you!

Communications materials, including a one-page handout and social media graphics, are now available in14 key languages to ensure our outreach is as inclusive as possible. This allows us to directly support and bridge communication gaps for our diverse communities.

You are encouraged to broadly share the downloadable assets in the toolkit. All of the materials are unbranded so that your offices can easily add your own logos and distribute them through your trusted channels.

Given the scale of these federal policy changes, your continued partnership and active engagement in sharing these resources are vital to keeping our communities connected to care.

As part of our continued outreach efforts, next month we will also be holding a series of Facebook Lives in English and Spanish to talk about the upcoming changes. Dates and times will be announced soon, and we hope you will share the information through your channels.

We also encourage you to promote the in-person events we host weekly to support Medicaid members with their redetermination paperwork. Click here for a list of dates. While CountyCare is organizing those events, they are for anyone who has Medicaid coverage.

Thank you again for your ongoing collaboration and support of those we serve.

Sincerely,

Dr. Erik Mikaitis

Chief Executive Officer

Cook County Public Health Offers Back-to-School Vaccinations at Suburban Cook County Community Events

Parents can get their children vaccinated for the upcoming school year, right on time for National Immunization Awareness Month in August.

Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) is providing back-to-school immunizations at no cost for the 2026-27 school year to children ages 6 months to 18 years old, regardless of immigration or insurance status, now through mid-October.

The mobile vaccination clinics began at community events and back-to-school fairs held throughout suburban Cook County, starting July 18 and running through August 13. Organizations in suburban Cook County can also request a mobile vaccination clinic for their upcoming event by filling out this form

Students in Illinois are required to have proof of immunization, or have a valid medical or religious exemption, by Oct. 15 each year.

Changes to Medicaid are Coming

If you receive Medicaid benefits, there are important changes you need to know about.

Starting Jan. 1, 2027, some enrollees will need to meet new work, education or community service requirements to keep their coverage. They will also have to reapply for Medicaid every six months, instead of once a year.

These new federal requirements will apply to individuals in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) expansion population, also known as ACA adults, who:

  • are ages 19 to 64,
  • do not receive Medicare, and
  • do not have a dependent child age 18 or younger in their home.

Some immigrants will also no longer qualify for Medicaid beginning in October 2026, including refugees, people seeking asylum and victims of domestic violence or human trafficking (Violence Against Women Act applicants and T visa holders).

While some Medicaid enrollees may be exempt from work requirements, it’s important to be aware of these changes and how they might affect you. Make sure the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services has your current contact information so they can tell you if you have to do something new to keep your coverage. You can update it here

You can find answers to your questions, links to important resources and more at Get Medicaid Facts. This online hub has information on these eligibility changes in 14 different languages as well as a calendar of events to get in-person help with Medicaid redetermination.

Remember: nothing with Medicaid has changed yet. You can still apply and use your Medicaid benefits as you always have.

Cook County Department of Public Health Launches “Ditch the Cloud” Campaign to Help Youth Learn the Truth About Vaping

Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) is launching Ditch the Cloud,” a new youth-focused vaping prevention campaign designed to raise awareness about the health risks of vaping and help young people make informed decisions about nicotine use.

“Many young people view vaping as low risk, but the reality is that most vaping products contain highly addictive nicotine and other harmful chemicals. Youth we’ve spoken with told us they want honest information about vaping and its effects on their health,” said Dr. Kiran Joshi, chief operating officer of Cook County Department of Public Health.

“This campaign was developed to meet young people with facts, not fear. We want young people to understand that vaping can have immediate consequences, while also ensuring they know support is available if they want to quit.”

While e-cigarette use among youth has declined in recent years, vaping remains an ongoing public health concern. National data  show that 95% of smokers start before the age of 21.

In 2024, the Suburban Cook County Youth Risk Behavioral Survey found 8.5% of Cook County students in the ninth through 12th grades reported current e-cigarette use, down from 16% in 2022. Of those, use was significantly higher among 12th grade students, with 14% reporting current use.

Ditch the Cloud includes social and digital advertising, influencer partnerships, bus shelter ads, educational materials, and a school-based awareness initiative in suburban Cook County high schools. CCDPH will provide schools with resources, including a soon-to-be-launched peer-to-peer video featuring local high school students sharing honest perspectives on vaping, addiction, and making informed choices.

Campaign materials debunk common myths about vaping and highlight the immediate and long-term health effects of nicotine use. From brain fog, anxiety and addiction, to impacts on mental and physical health.

Ditch the Cloud also connects youth to free, confidential cessation resources. Young people interested in quitting nicotine can text “Start My Quit” to 36072.

Protect yourself from the Sun

July is UV Awareness Month. With many of us spending more time outdoors during the summer, it's a good reminder to protect ourselves from the sun's harmful UV rays. Simple steps like wearing broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen, seeking shade during the middle of the day, and using protective clothing and sunglasses can help reduce the risk of skin damage and skin cancer.

Cook County Health's Dermatology Department provides evaluation and treatment for a variety of skin conditions, including concerns related to sun exposure and changes in the skin. If you notice a new mole, changes in an existing mole, or other unusual skin changes, talk with your health care provider.

If you need an appointment with a Dermatologist, please visit our website or call the Patient Support Center at 312-864-0200.

Jada Alexander

Jada Alexander is a recent graduate from Eastern Illinois University and this summer she joined CCH’s External and Community Affairs team as an intern. At the university, she majored and received a Bachelor of Science in Public Health with a concentration in Health Education. Throughout her academic career, she developed a passion for health equity, community engagement, and improving access to healthcare for underserved populations, a drive that brought her to CCH.

Her internship at CCH, organized through the Health Career Connection (HCC) program, gives her valuable hands-on experience in community health initiatives, public health planning, and health promotion. Jada participates in meetings with community partners, completes reports summarizing key discussions and initiatives, and contributes to projects focused on improving health outcomes throughout Cook County. Through Jada’s involvement in CCH and CountyCare’s Redetermination events, she works with members going through the arduous process of keeping their Medicaid and SNAP benefits. In addition, she found our Englewood Health Center’s Walk with a Doctor program innovative and a good way to provide medical advice in a friendly non-clinical setting. These experiences give Jada a greater understanding of how collaboration between public health organizations and community stakeholders can create meaningful, lasting change.

Jada plans to continue her education by earning a Master of Public Health at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) and pursuing a career where she can advocate for health equity, particularly for minority women, children, and underserved communities. Her long-term goal is to lead programs and develop policies that address health disparities, improve access to preventive care, and create healthier communities through education, outreach, and evidence-based public health practices.

Outside of school and work, Jada enjoys exploring new restaurants, especially seafood or tacos, spending time with family and friends, and finding opportunities to experience different cultures through food and community events like the Taste of Chicago or everyday people. Jada also loves to bake and cook so finding new recipes and trying them helps build confidence and joyful moments. Jada believes that maintaining a healthy work-life balance allows me to bring energy, creativity, and enthusiasm to both my professional and personal endeavors.

Health Career Connection (HCC) is a national nonprofit with a proven 35-year track record of strengthening the healthcare workforce while preparing the next generation of health leaders pursuing careers in medicine, public health, health administration, advocacy, community health, and related fields. Serving 14 regions across the country, HCC partners with health systems, public health agencies, academic institutions, federally qualified health centers, and community organizations to build workforce capacity, advance organizational excellence, and cultivate values-driven leaders who reflect the communities they serve.

HCC has established partnerships with many of the region's leading healthcare, public health, and workforce organizations, including Cook County Health.

Each year, HCC supports approximately 400 paid interns nation-wide through a comprehensive recruitment and selection process that begins each fall. Candidates are selected based on their demonstrated commitment to health, leadership potential, geographic connection to the communities served, and alignment with partner workforce needs. Intern applications are announced at the HHC website when they go live.

HCC's impact extends well beyond the internship experience. Its national alumni network includes nearly 6,000 health professionals serving in professional and leadership roles across health systems, public health agencies, academic institutions, and community organizations nationwide. HCC recently launched its Emerging Leaders Program, providing mentoring, professional development, networking, and career support to promising candidates who were not selected for an internship. The initiative reflects HCC's commitment to investing in future health leaders beyond internship placement and strengthening the long-term healthcare talent pipeline.

For the past two years, Cook County Health has served as an HCC internship site-host partner, providing meaningful, project-based experiences in areas including epidemiology, the Simulation Lab, and civic engagement. This partnership strengthens Cook County Health's talent pipeline by connecting local students with opportunities to gain hands-on experience while contributing to initiatives that improve the health of our communities.

Together, Cook County Health and HCC are investing in the next generation of healthcare leaders while strengthening the workforce that will serve our communities for years to come.
