Greetings to Our Cooper Families and Students,
What a great Snow Week we had ending with our pepfest and the Jack of Hearts Dance on Saturday night. It is great to see our Hawks not only working hard on their academics, but enjoying some fun time as we continue to build back part of our Cooper Community that we lost during Distance Learning.
-
On Feb 23rd we will be participating in the MN Student Survey which happens every three years. More information about this survey is included in the Hawk Highlight section below.
We would appreciate any assistance in ensuring some the basic expectations are followed:
-
School starts at 7:20am. Students need to be in class and ready to start by this time.
- Need to clean up after ourselves. Garbage left out in the lot or in the hallways is not acceptable as we want to be good neighbors. Please throw trash away. If this continues to be an issue, we may need to close open lunch until we get things cleaned up.
-
Masks are required while in the school building. We love our Hawks and want to stay healthy as possible so they can be here every day.
- Student IDs will be required for students to leave for open lunch as well as go to the other eating spots around the building during lunch. This will be starting on Monday, October 25th.
- No outside food is to be delivered during the day or brought into classrooms.
Asynchronous Learning Day
Friday, February 18th:
Instructional Plan:
February 18 is designated as a district asynchronous learning day. Students will be at home learning at their own pace for the day.
Instructional Schedule:
- Students will be expected to log on to each of their classes at some time during the day. If they do not, they will be marked as absent.
- Teachers will provide lesson through Schoology for students to work on.
- There will not be a designated lunch or HLL time
Teacher Office Hours on 1/14 and 2/18:
During this time you can email and or set up a Google Meet with your teacher:

8:20-9:20 Math
9:20-10:20 Science
10:20-11:20 English

ACT testing is March 8th
Dear 11th/12th Grade Cooper Students and Families,
Each year students in 11th grade participate in ACT testing, a nationally recognized college entrance exam. The ACT will be administered in Robbinsdale Area Schools on Tuesday, March 8, 2022 and is free of charge.
Please note, the counseling office will be contacting students in 12th grade who did not participate in the ACT at the district last year (March 2021) to inquire if they would like to participate in ACT testing this year.
This test is not offered virtually at this time. Students who are taking the ACT are the only ones who will report to school on March 8. The exception being that students in the RISE and WAVE special education center-based programs will attend school on this day regardless of grade. STARS students will follow the general education expectation (only students taking the ACT will come to school).
Regular bus routes will run on March 8. Students taking the ACT report to school by 7:15 a.m. Testing will take approximately five hours. These times will vary for students who qualify for accommodations. Please note that due to a nation-wide shortage of bus drivers, it’s possible bus routes may be canceled at any time due to an illness or a driver being unavailable. Because of this, it’s advised families have a plan in place on this date in the event a route has to be canceled.
Cooper only: Cooper High School will be hosting the annual Minnesota Association of Counselors of Color (MNACC) college fair on March 8, 2022 from 12:30 -2:00. Cooper students are highly encouraged to stay and attend the fair as this is a great opportunity to meet with approximately 60 colleges and universities. Students will eat lunch in the cafeteria after the ACT and then report to the community gym for the college fair when instructed by school staff. Students can then take their regular bus home.
Grades 9, 10 and 12 (unless the grade 12 student is taking the ACT) will have a digital school day on March 8, 2022 to minimize disruptions for students taking the ACT. While grade 9, 10 and 12 students will not physically attend school on March 8, teachers will assign work for these students to complete outside of school. We will share additional information with families prior to testing.

MN Student Survey
In the next few weeks, our students in grades 9 and 11 will be participating in something called the 2022 Minnesota Student Survey (MSS). All ninth and 11th graders in Robbinsdale Area Schools will be taking the same survey.
The MSS is an anonymous statewide school-based survey that helps the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) and other state agencies gain insights into the world of students and their experiences. It’s also one of the longest running youth surveys in the nation.
Our students in grades 9 and 11 will be taking the survey, which takes approximately 30-50 minutes to complete, on February 23rd.
It’s important for you to know the MSS is voluntary, and families of students in grades 9 and 11 can choose not to have their children participate. If you don’t want your child participating in the anonymous survey, please fill out this Google Opt Out Form. In addition, for families who wish to preview the questions, links to the survey can be found in the opt-out form.
The survey is important. The MSS is the primary source of comprehensive data on youth at the state, county and local level in Minnesota. The survey asks students about how well school is going, their future plans, out-of-school activities, physical and mental health, relationships, substance use and more. This useful information about their thoughts and behaviors helps communities and schools develop effective programs and provide better services.
Again, the survey and its results are totally anonymous. To prevent students or families from being identified, students do not provide their names, student identification numbers, or other personal information.
Thank you for your support and continued partnership.
Sincerely,
Dr. Frank Herman
Principal

IB/MYP, AP & Career and College Information

Course Registration and Full Diploma Information (10th Grade): As a Cooper junior, students have the opportunity to take our most challenging courses in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. Information was distributed last month during English class. If your student is interested in pursuing the IB full Diploma (where students study six subjects over 2 years, take the accompanying IB exams, and complete the additional requirements of CAS, Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay), they need to meet with IB staff to ensure that they will register for the appropriate courses for next year.
If your student is interested, encourage them to make an appointment with either Mrs. Christensen, the IB Coordinator, or Mrs. Meyer, the IB Administrative Assistant, to set up a 2-year Diploma plan.
IB Testing (Grades 11 and 12): IB tests occur in May, and every test has a classroom component, the Internal Assessment (IA). Students that are registered to test must complete the IA or they are ineligible to test. Per the registration form, students that do not complete a testing component (either the IA, formal test in May or both) will be assessed an $80 penalty. Families will be notified by classroom teachers if students have not completed their IA for a specific class. Contact IB Coordinator Kari Christensen ([email protected] or 763-504-8644) with questions.
Personal Project (Grade 10): Personal Projects are due to the student's supervisor on February 14! Check out these student interview synopses for a sneak peak. If you have questions, don't hesitate to reach out to IB Coordinator Kari Christensen ([email protected] or 763-504-8644) or IB Administrative Assistant Jodie Meyer ([email protected] or 763-504-8684).
Personal Project (Grade 10): The fourth student meeting for the Personal Project will be held this week. All students have been assigned supervisors and are expected to complete the Personal Project. If you have questions, don't hesitate to reach out to IB Coordinator Kari Christensen ([email protected] or 763-504-8644) or IB Administrative Assistant Jodie Meyer ([email protected] or 763-504-8684).
